[closed] Xorg not displaying with Intel Graphics HD 630 (Intel NUC)

For the past few weeks, I've been working towards converting my main machine (an Intel NUC8i7HVB) to one built on Arch. My end goal is to pci passthrough the Radeon GPU to a Windows 10 VM for gaming, while keeping a developer environment set up on the Arch host, running off of the integrated graphics card.
Up until now, I've been running my window manager off of the Radeon (works perfectly; no problems). However, when I modify the xorg.conf file to utilize the iGPU instead (first with the modesetting driver), it gives the error "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." When I instead try to use the xf86-video-intel driver, no errors arise in the Xorg log, but nothing is displayed to my monitors (though I am able to change ttys when both drivers give a blank screen). I've tried most solutions on this board (from changing kernel parameters, to stripping down the xorg.conf to just the "Device" section, etc.) and nothing has worked. Hopefully new insight will be gained from asking this; thanks in advance.

Additional Notes:
- I did notice that the iGPU (PCI 00:02.0) is not marked as VGA Compatible... does that have anything to do with this?
- The only kernel parameters I've changed are "intel_iommu=on iommu=pt i915.modeset=1"
- The only files in both "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/" and "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" are files that configure my input devices

Here's the logs and xorg.confs for both configurations (modesetting and intel drivers) in addition to the "lspci -nnk" output:
modesetting xorg.conf
modesetting Xorg.0.log
intel xorg.conf
intel Xorg.0.log
lspci -nnk output

There'e two hdmi outputs connected to the AMD chip and none to the intel chip…

If you think there should be something (3rd monitor) connected to the intel chip, please post your dmesg.
Otherwise, just plug a cable into one of the outputs of the intel chip.

You can otherwise run on the intel chip and redirect the output through the AMD chip (abusing it as a crtc hub) but that will spoil the passthrough thing (since the main OS has to stay away from it)

Thanks for the reply, seth!

Looking through the technical specs of the nuc, here, it doesn’t appear as if there is a way to physically connect outputs to the intel chip. Additionally, the modesetting driver is still able to query the EDID information of the monitors without them being physically connected to the iGPU? Is my goal of running Arch solely off of the Intel Graphics card impossible?

Re: [closed] Xorg not displaying with Intel Graphics HD 630 (Intel NUC)

Slightly tangential question, if I were to go down the redirection path as seth mentioned, would both cards be able to render at the same time? i.e. would the output from the iGPU continue to be passed through the AMD card to one of my monitors while the AMD card rendered the Windows VM to the other? Or am I misunderstanding how the passthrough works?
(Another) Side note, I've achieved my desired setup (Arch running off of the iGPU, while the Radeon isn't connected to Arch in any way and instead is PCI passthrough-ed to a Windows VM) on an old DELL Inspiron 2330 i7, which I image has very similar internals in terms of the GPUs. However, when I attempt to recreate the configuration on my Nuc, nothing displays and I get the errors listed above. One key difference between these two machines is that the working one lists the iGPU as "VGA Compatible", while my current machine does not... Most other things are the same, including the majority of the Xorg log when booting via the iGPU using the modesetting driver.

Yup.

1.6.1.1 Intel® High Definition (Intel® HD) Graphics
The graphics outputs of the NUC8i7HV are not physically connected to the HD Graphics 63

The modesetting driver controls both chips in your first config:

[ 3.536] (II) modeset(0): using drv /dev/dri/card0
[ 3.549] (II) modeset(G0): using drv /dev/dri/card1

Is my goal of running Arch solely off of the Intel Graphics card impossible?

If that includes seeing something on a monitor that' attached to the AM chip: yes.
You can create VirtualOutputs w/ the intel driver that will allow you to use the chip regardles of the output absence.

The DELL Inspiron 2330 most likely has outputs attached to the intel chip - check "xrandr --listproviders"

Re: [closed] Xorg not displaying with Intel Graphics HD 630 (Intel NUC)

The output of “xrandr --listproviders” on the DELL

Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x45 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 3 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting

The output of “xrandr --listproviders” on the Nuc (with the working AMD config)

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x5b cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 6 outputs: 6 associated providers: 1 name:Unknown AMD Radeon GPU @ pci:0000:01:00.0
Provider 1: id: 0x99 cap: 0x5, Source Output, Source Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 0 associated providers: 1 name:modesetting

Would blacklisting the amd card using the modprobe.d directory (what I did with the Inspiron) be able to achieve a similar effect? Or am I assuming these two computers have very similar internals when that may not be the case?

Re: [closed] Xorg not displaying with Intel Graphics HD 630 (Intel NUC)

DELL has only one provider - sure there's a dedicated GPU? (lspci & xorg log)
If there is and you successfully passed it through - fine. The remaining intel chip still has 3 crtcs and 3 outputs.

Unlike the NUC:

Provider 1: id: 0x99 cap: 0x5, Source Output, Source Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 0 associated providers: 1 name:modesetting

The intel chip must redirect the signal *somewhere* - you might be able to use eg. a USB 3.0 to VGA adapter to link out the signal, but the way the NUC is designed is to use the AMD chip either directly or as sink for the intel framebuffer.
And in that case I don't think that you can pass it through to windows (what implies to hide it from linux)

Here's the lspci for the DELL: https://pastebin.com/NGWeFXQ6
And here's the xorg log: https://pastebin.com/mQDEbbWA

I guess I should start researching single-GPU passthrough or dual-booting as an alternative

Yeah, there's an AMD chip in the DELL system and it's being passed through.

Not sure whether that's relevant to your situation, but https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=268002
