Nice name 8)
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch. ![]()

For those who are unsure, it's been tagged on the homepage:
http://archlinux.org/
Just down the right, under releases. It has not been released yet, it has only been named.

Does anyone know - it was tagged because name was chosen or because it is planned for release soon?
I think if it will be released really soon, then it will be something like tpowa's ISOs, but made with phrakture's livecd generator + some improvements from Archie/AEGIS/larch devs.
But if it will be released not in this month, then it will have a completely new installer, I suppose.

...for release soon?
The emoticon. It indicates sarcasm at something, like you don't think the devs are doing a good job, but you don't care to elaborate.

No, I didn't even think about such interpretation of this smile.
Sorry. I just put it to indicate that I am curious, because I don't know any timeframe for 0.8 at all. Just ignore that smile. ![]()

Its ok, I just realized I was getting a strange feeling from some of your posts using that emoticon, because it didn't seem to suit the text. Try the :? to show confusion, or :?: for curiosity.

OK, I'll use them.
BTW, I don't like default phpBB smiles at all.
So, lets back on topic.
Anyone knows some timeframe for 0.8? Or it hasn't been even discussed among devs yet?
An answer like "it will be released when ready" is not acceptable. ![]()

Back on topic also, I don't know. In general, they seem to choose a release name a few weeks before release, but sometimes things come up. It will definately be released when its ready, they won't say "in one month" and stick to it if something goes wrong, they'll say "in one month" and then take two months if its not ready.
Its possible a dev will reply here saying what's been up on the dev mailing list, especially since there's new developers now that still frequent the forum. Otherwise we'll hear about it in the next newsletter.

Thanks for useful info!
Of course I understand that there are no strict timelines. The interest is how much has been already done behind the scene, how much still remains and how much time it will require when everything will be OK (multiply by 1.5 for situations described in Murphy's laws
). But this info only devs know. Maybe they tell us some secrets? I promise I won't tell to the whole world

Aha! At least iphitus reads this thread. Lets terrorize him!
Seriously, this thread reminds me similar threads about new Opera versions on Opera forum.

Voodoo is a pretty sweet name. I'm glad we have a release with a decent name now (the recent ones have been pretty lame IMHO)

"Wombat" is by far the best name. I love wombats, I use Wombat for my nickname for everything except forums.

Well, as for the choosing of the name, that's pretty much Judd's honour, we dont really take any part in it. And as for 0.8 being released, it's a fair way away yet -- no murmers or proposed release dates yet, so don't get too excited.

In general, what's the purpose of giving a name to a new upgrade of a distro? Moreover, giving a name that has no direct relation to the upgrade.
What's the main difference between 0.72 and 0.8. There is X and kernel upgrade. If so, what would be the name.

Noodle and Voodoo are the only two to have amused to me (even though I started with Gimmick (I was stuck with linux on PPC for a while 'cause I lacked a PC), anyway).
rasat: Your point? It's just an amusing tag. Like how Tiger is really 10.4 for Mac OS X and Leopard is 10.5 (hopefully it'll run on my iBook).
By the way, iphitus, in case you haven't noticed, you signed your post: Janes instead of James (I'm trying to think if I have done that before :? , although it would probably be close to Janie 'cause I prefer Jamie).

Name is an entirely irrelevant and totally unimportant thing. Like most release names, it's got no meaning and offers little purpose other than easier identification. I wouldnt really dwell on it.
Between 0.7.2 and 0.8 currently:
install is now fully udev based
mkinitcpio
newer kernel, and X.
glibc2.4 and gcc? (or were they in 0.7.2?)
Depending on what's decided and when it comes out, we might see other changes like a new installer, pacman3 and revamped network scripts or they might go into a later version.
Nothing much with 0.8 is solid, so things will change. And whatever happens to come in 0.8, will hit the repos before 0.8 anyway -- so the release is irrelevant if you already have an install.

No problem, iphitus.
Pacman 3 would be a nice little surprise for 0.8.
* yankees26 remembers how looking at pacman 1.0 source code taught him how to use libtar
That and pacman 3 looks nice though.

Hmm... I don't think pacman3 and new installer will be here really soon. Is it a good idea to wait for them to be finished for inclusion in new release? I personally would like to see 0.8 as just mkinitcpio-based Live CD with improvements from tpowa's ISOs (including improved installer), even if pacman3 and installer-ng will be ready for this moment.
Maybe just make arch-0.8*.iso with pacman 2.9.8 and tpowa's improved installer and arch-0.8-base-testing.iso with pacman3 and new installer? I'm sure there will be need for testing new installer (pacman3 (when it will be ready) can be obtained from [unstable] or even [testing] anyway), and the best way to test new installer without breaking most people machines is to have testing ISO in parallel.
What do you think about this idea?

hmm, what is supposed to be new in pacman3? Is there a feature list or a place for suggestions ?

You can see changes in Frugalware's branch here:
http://darcs.frugalware.org/darcsweb/da … ob;f=/NEWS
Some changes like pkg.tar.gz -> fpm are Frugalware specific, some are not yet megred into Arch's pacman CVS tree. Phrakture is working on it now.
The most importand change is that code is now separated into libalpm and pacman. Pacman is now a console frontend to libalpm (ALPM = Arch Linux Package Manager), other frontends can be written more easily now.
There can be different backends, file-based backend is implemented, but I think gdbm and/or sqlite backends will be there when codebase stabilizes.
Plus there are many improvements.

Emoticon etiquitte from Dusty.... not sure what to say. When's the auto-prune-Dusty phpbb plugin going to be finished?

file-based backend is implemented
By "file-based" do you mean that the wonderful devs have crafted a FUSE filesystem for libalpm? If so, sweet! If not, I might work on that some day.

AFAIK no. By "file-based" I mean current /var/lib/pacman tree.
There is also patch for Pacman 2.9.8 that adds gdbm support. It might be ported to Pacman 3 (I don't think this feature will be added to 2.9.x tree).
