[ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

Hi all!

I am new to KDE5/Plasma and e.g. would like to have blur effects (next to round client corners) – but I don't seem to have that item.

Having a fresh Arch system on an old machine, in Plasma, System Configs, Desktop Behaviour | Desktop Effects used to crash, until I do a

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 plasmashell --replace &

Yet I can't make that permanent, except for playing with those settings in Monitors | Compositing. This is the current section as a reference:

[Compositing]
GLCore=true
OpenGLIsUnsafe=false

which means, OpenGL is at v3.1.

On the other hand, glxinfo states OpenGL is only v2.0; glxgears is only at 11 fps. – So how to change that?

Further, I've a second box exactly like this one but without KDE/Plasma, and it already runs OpenGL v3.2. Just too bad I still can't recall how I got v3.2 enabled a couple of years ago. – This is their 20-intel.conf:

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Intel Graphics"
        Driver          "intel"
        Option          "DRI" "3"
EndSection

Very likely I am missing something. Any ideas?

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

$ glxinfo|grep OpenGL

OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Q33
OpenGL version string: 1.4 Mesa 21.1.5
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 2.0 Mesa 21.1.5
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 1.0.16
OpenGL ES profile extensions:

As I said...

Strange thing is, OpenGL version and OpenGL ES profile version differ.
(On my other box they're 3.1 and 3.2 respectively.)

So you don't understand that is what your Intel chip only has support for?

What do you mean?

It already supports OpenGL 3.x on the other identical machine. And I want to make it run on my current one, too.

make that the output of glxinfo -B please .

Also full lspci -knn output from both machines so we can verify whether they're identical and what graphics chipsets they have.

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

OK then guys, I've got new findings!

I now also installed KDE/Plasma on the other machine, though I once didn't want to.

Remember, both are the same brand and model, and have a i915 GPU – except, the other box has 8 GB of RAM and is Manjaro, while this box has 6 GB and runs on fresh Arch. Both have the same 20-intel.conf (see above) and Intel driver, i.e. xf86-video-intel and mesa stuff.

The Manjaro box has got a working OpenGL v3.x, just I can't remember how I mamanged that exactly. That's what glxinfo states – and even glxgears displays almost 500(!) fps.

In comparison, on the Arch box there's something wrong with OpenGL; its version may be 1.4 or 2.0. glxgears here displays only up to 12 fps – wtf??

However, I found out to get Plasma's desktop effects enabled one does not necessarily need OpenGL v3.1 (to be selected in System settings | Displays & Monitors | Compositing), v2.0 is enough, cf. (link)! Even though there's v3.x on the Manjaro box, enabling v3.1 will slow glxgears down to 320 fps.

Yet here with v2.0 selected, "Desktop Effects" will load properly and has got an item "Blur". Additionally, to get a blurred background in Konsole terminal, its own enabled blurred transparency must be configured by editing a Konsole profile (see the link). And it looks very nice in deed!

On the Arch box so far, even if "Blur" is enabled in Konsole, the background may be transparent but there is no blur – as here in "Desktop Effects" yet there is no item "Blur" when run with OpenGL v2.0; but when run with v3.1, "System Settings ... Desktop Effects" very likely crashes.

Yeah, I also stumbled upon that, but the Manjaro hasn't got either a /etc/drirc or ~/.drirc – and it works flawlessly.

Both boxes do have the same mesa version:

$ pacman -Qi mesa
Name                     : mesa
Version                  : 21.1.5-1

And I consider good old Arch to be more bleeding edge than Manjaro.

OK, here you are with some more details –

Manjaro box (OpenGL working fast):

$ glxinfo -B

name of display: :0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
    Vendor: Mesa/X.org (0xffffffff)

    Max core profile version: 4.5
    Max compat profile version: 3.1
    Max GLES1 profile version: 1.1
    Max GLES[23] profile version: 3.2
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa/X.org
OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.1, 128 bits)

OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL version string: 3.1 Mesa 21.1.5
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.40
OpenGL context flags: (none)

Arch box (OpenGL performing poorly):

$ glxinfo -B

name of display: :0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
    Vendor: Intel Open Source Technology Center (0x8086)
    Device: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Q33  (0x29d2)
    Version: 21.1.5
    Accelerated: yes
    Video memory: 384MB
    Unified memory: yes
    Preferred profile: compat (0x2)
    Max core profile version: 0.0
    Max compat profile version: 1.4
    Max GLES1 profile version: 1.1
    Max GLES[23] profile version: 2.0
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Q33
OpenGL version string: 1.4 Mesa 21.1.5
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 2.0 Mesa 21.1.5
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 1.0.16

Well, obviously the installed packages are the same, their drivers/vendors and memories differ. (The latter accelaration comes from an added option "uxa", what doesn't help either.)

Weird, but we are getting closer, I guess.

I can also post the lspci knn's if necessary; will take a few minutes.

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

lspci output confirms graphics hardware is same type and generation , but the glxinfo output shows the used drivers in userspace are not .

manjaro

Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
    Vendor: Mesa/X.org (0xffffffff)
    Device: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.1, 128 bits) (0xffffffff)

archlinux

Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
    Vendor: Intel Open Source Technology Center (0x8086)
    Device: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Q33  (0x29d2)

manjaro is using software rendering (processor based) while arch uses hardware rendering (videocard based) .
Your systems apparently perfrom better wrt graphics when the processor does most of the work .
(not uncommon for older intel videochipsets)

Check the xorg log on the manjaro box , I think you'll find it uses modesetting instead of intel for X .

Try removing xf86-video-intel from the archlinux box .

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

Yes, that's what I said.

Anyway, meanwhile I recognized compared to the Manjaro box I didn't have libva-mesa-driver installed as well as in the mkinitcpio.conf there wasn't a line "MODULES=(intel_apg i915)". I changed these and rebooted – so far didn't make things better; seems entering the "Desktop Effects" is crashing all the time, even when "Compositing" uses OpenGL 2.0, also the glxgears is still at 10 fps or so~

(Besides IMO the MODULES is not really necessary, and I only added them on the Manjaro box because of Plymouth. – On my new Arch I start X from console yet.)

Will try removing the Intel driver now as you suggested.

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

If removing xf86-video-intel doesn't help, run on the arch box

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true glxinfo -B    #post output
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true gklxgears

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

Thanks, yes, it didn't as X then crashes.

However, when editing ~/.xinitrc to:

export DESKTOP_SESSION=plasma
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true
exec startplasma-x11

starting X and further simply entering

$ glxinfo -B

name of display: :0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
    Vendor: Mesa/X.org (0xffffffff)

OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 Mesa 21.1.5
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.20

in a terminal, one sees the new rendering device as well as video memory has been extended up to physical RAM. – glxgears is now lagging at 55 fps, with is a bit better, but still slower than the monitor with 60 frames (and the Manjaro box with 500).

Additonally, there's now a configurable item "Blur" in "Desktop Effects"; ntl there's still no blur at all when editing konsole's profile and after reboot. – But at least there's some progress on this issue. ^^

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

X "crashes" because there's likely a residual configlet in /{etc,usr/share}/xorg.conf* that references the intel driver.
Get rid of that too.

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

Like so:

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Intel Graphics"
#        Driver          "intel"
#        Option          "DRI" "3"
EndSection

Or should I have no xorg.conf* at all?

If that's the entire content of a single file, delete that file.

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

Uninstalling the intel driver, deleting the file (i.e. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf), rebooting => X refusing to start.

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

That log uses the xf86-video-intel driver and shows a server that ran successfully for about 20 seconds?

It also shows the presence of a second GPU… what's the output of "lspci"?

Re: [ ABANDONED ] Can't get KDE/Plasma OpenGL desktop effects run

Shows up as independent VGA and display controller.

Anyway, we lack the crash-related xorg log (xorg.0.log.old - or archive it right after the crash)

Maybe that's the mesa emulating it? (Probably not, as that is a piece of software...)
Or, it's there because of both the VGA and DVI ports.

Anyway the Manjaro box also has it.
