[SOLVED] Problem with startx

Hello.

Very fresh to Arch and ran into a weird issue today. My install is only a couple days old and everything has been working completely fine so far. Today I booted the machine and after logging in all I could see was my background (I assume nitrogen loaded just fine). Out of the blue, my window manager dwm and terminal st don't seem to work. Between this and the boot before, I don't really recall installing much or anything too weird. The only thing that stands out (or is more unusual) to me is I used the following command to try and fix a screen tearing issue (which it did):

I ctrl + alt + f2'd and tried to startx from there, but now I get weird errors. I tried to find how to fix this, but to no avail. Here's my .xinitrc and the .log startx gives me. I received slightly more errors before, some mentioning nouveau drivers and NVIDIA. I gathered it was perhaps using wrong video drivers and something was wrong with my NVIDIA setup. So I fiddled with that a bit and those errors seem to be gone. There's still some sort of X server issue? I don't really know anymore if those things are related. I'm also not entirely sure if the xrandrs in .xinitrc are needed, but they were suggested somewhere for the previous errors.

Have you updated system?, meaning installed something, like xorg, nvidia driver or window manager of your choice. Sometimes happened for me that most recent update have problems. In this case solution is downgrade package(s). Usually the problem is fixed soon, so after couple of days can try updating again.

My whole install is quite fresh and most (if not all) of my packages are the newest versions. dwm, st, nvidia, and I think xorg, haven't changed. I've installed couple new things between the boots and did the screen tearing fix, but nothing else has really changed. This is why I'm having hard time understanding why something would suddenly break between boots. I guess logically it must be something new that I installed recently, unless it could be something else I'm not aware of.

pacman -Syu means *all* your packages are up to date. Is this a partial upgrade?

Please also post an updated xorg.log from running startx with /etc/X11/xorg.conf disabled / removed.

Then post an updated xorg log.
If it remains a problem, remove/comment picom and try to start xterm (dwm and st might require rebuilds after an update of system libraries)

Okay. Maybe this is of some help to someone some day. I managed to fix this somehow. I fiddled with xterm and added exec xterm to .xinitrc to try and see if that works. At first it didn't, yet then it did. Go figure.

Between this I read the ^Xinit#xserverrc stuff in the link there. Killed all the xorg stuff, window manager, played in xterm. I don't know what I was doing, but I was doing something. At some point I figured since exec xterm in .xinitrc works, I guess xserver now works. dwm still didn't run through it. I somehow stumbled upon people talking about .Xauthority and started playing with that. I re-checked my /home/user/ rights and deleted old .Xauthority, tried recreating it, etc. After quite a few tries it finally seemed to create it correctly and with the right privileges. Swapped back to exec dwm in .xinitrc and everything works. I don't know what exactly was the issue, but all this fixed it.

Did you attempt a sudo-notfix inbetween?

That's definitely possible to have happened during my amateur fix hours. I don't entirely understand how it stopped working in the first place as I don't start startx manually.

The typical cause for an autostarting X11 failure is currently late KMS (ie. systemd starts the graphical.target before the GPU is initialized) - see the link I posted in #9
