Need some recommendations for terminal apps

I need some that work without starting the DE for writing and listening to music. My laptop battery isn't the best one and I like working in bare-bone TTY

I'm already using nano for writing, but I wanted to know if there is something with grammar checker. Any music player will do as long it works in background/across TTYs, so I can listen while writing

Vim has grammar checkers. I'm pretty sure emacs does too, and that nano never will.

For music, if you want more than the list you were already provided with, you'll need to be more specific. I suspect you already have aplay installed, and that might do the job. There's a fair chance (given you implied a DE is at least installed) that you also have ffmpeg which provides ffplay which will also play music.

Some recommandation for tty apps
file-manager: nnn ( very lightweight with sane defaults ), vifm/ranger (more features),
text-editor: micro ( non-modal like nano but with support for addon plugins and syntaxt highlighting)
music player: mpd (server-client arch, but difficult to configure), mpv (easy, complete), ffplay ( barebones)
search-helper: fzf (excellent for scripting)

The list tells you which music players work in the console along with a short description of each and a link to the upstream website with full details.

As jasonwryan points out in his follow-up answer, users are expected to try different apps to find the one that best suits them. Preferences vary wildly so one person's ideal app might be a tedious beast for someone else. In the end, the list of recommendations will tend to cover the list of available apps, minus the detailed upstream descriptions, so posting the wiki list is ultimately a shortcut to the end of this thread.

Try some of the available music players and if you find that they don't meet your criteria, ask for more specific recommendations while stating which ones you've tried and what they lack (as you've done for nano and your requirement for a grammar checker). cmus is at the top of the list and it meets both of your criteria (console-based, works when switching ttys).

mpd (daemon) with mpc (client) is my first choice for music in any environment. Of course emacs has some excellent clients for mpd as well
