Xorg doesn't load off of config file with old AMD card

I recently had to install an old Radeon HD 7870 because my modern card broke and I had this laying around. I currently run Xorg without a config file because of this problem, however I feel I need to use a config file because my current minimum and maximum resolution on my single monitor are both 1024x768 (4:3) while my monitor is 1920x1080 (16:9). While I am still able to use my machine at this resolution it gives me way less space than my old dual 1080p monitor setup (the 7870 only had one output that I had a cable for). The only way I could find to fix this was to edit my xorg.conf file, however if I create an xorg.conf file xorg will fail and create the following log file:

I have tried my best to use google to diagnose the errors in that log but it is hard to know what matters and what doesn't as some people claim they get some of them on a perfectly functional xorg config.

log from when I don't have a config file and it works:

other information that could possible relate to my GPU:
GPU: Radeon HD 7870
Video Driver: amdgpu
PCIe slot: PCIe 3.0 16x
HDMI output on card to DVI input on monitor

Hopefully there is something obvious I'm missing

Re: Xorg doesn't load off of config file with old AMD card

Post your config file.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Xorg doesn't load off of config file with old AMD card

That seems to be a Pitcairn GPU and since AMD forces us all to learn geography, that's a southern island (though I'm not sure south of what…)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU … K)_support

[ 55.201] (II) AMDGPU(0): [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled.
[ 55.201] (EE) AMDGPU(0): [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:03:00.0: No such file or directory
[ 55.201] (II) AMDGPU(1): [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled.
[ 55.201] (EE) AMDGPU(1): [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:03:00.1: No such file or directory
[ 55.201] (EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.

The static server config you generated references a device that isn't there.

[ 21.296] (II) FBDEV: driver for framebuffer: fbdev
[ 21.296] (II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
[ 21.296] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 21.296] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting
[ 21.296] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

Without it, you end up w/ no drm and the framebuffer driver - and the VESA resolutions.

The answer is in your dmesg/system journal (sudo journalctl -b)
=> post that.

Re: Xorg doesn't load off of config file with old AMD card

Sorry for wasting your time and that I couldn't try to figure out this problem if anyone else is having it but I unexpectedly managed to get my hands on a new card and no long have to deal with the old one.
