[Solved] Slow (~10Mbits/sec) Ethernet Connection even on local network

Hi!

As the title states, I have a very slow ethernet connection on an otherwise good (fresh and recent) Arch install.

The machine is a Dell XPS8940, the NIC that is being used resolves to the "Rivet Networks E2600 PCIe Gigabit Ethernet controller" which shows that it uses the r8169 kernel driver via `lspci -k`.

I've noticed the issue as via ethernet all downloads are capped to about ~1MB/sec and even using iperf to and from the (Arch Linux) RPI4 that's just a couple of links further on the same network gives me this:

A bit more, but still not great for a 1000Mb/s uplink on a Gigabit internet connection.

Ethtool shows the following for the network interface

Seems all good to me if I'm not mistaken?!

Wifi works better, not super great, but better (>100Mb/sec) but I'd like to get the ethernet port working if possible.

I'm using Networkmanager to setup the network connection on boot, I used netctl prior but switched to Networkmanager in the hope to get this fixed - which was unfortunately not very successful :(

Edit:

It was the network cable. Remember that a tiny Cat5E Cable that isn't shielded, laid across a dozen power cables will kill your bandwidth. It'll work, but not great.

To get the obvious out of the way. Have you tried a different Ethernet cable?

Replaced the Cat5E cable that I had in place with a Cat6A cable that I knew was good and I'm getting way better speeds

[  3]  0.0-10.0 sec   114 MBytes  95.0 Mbits/sec

Although this still seems low for a fully wired 1000Mb/s connection if I'm not missing something obvious?

nvm, it was the stupid cable.

[  3]  0.0-10.0 sec  1.10 GBytes   943 Mbits/sec

After testing direct connection.

1up for my private survey, still leading by a mile is # cause: it's always the cable.
