[SOLVED] Newly mounted drive names displaying as odd strings of text

So I have been trying to get my hdd drives to work for a while now and I thought that I got it right this time, but I feel like I'm just walking in circles.

I partitioned my disks thru gdisk and they both have an efi, swap, and filesystem partition. I don't know if this is the right setup that I should have as these were supposed to be used just as "extra storage" but that's what I did.

Mounted the drives and it basically looks like this:

/run/media/user/ff5bd9fc-0cf4-416e-8d2f-3b48fa37f1c1/

and

/run/media/user/e42dd1a0-aa29-455b-98e9-51bf962700fd/

Oh yeah, I should probably mention, that I also had to use chown just to be able to make folders in those. I didn't make any but thought that's worth pointing out

not idea what to do with this honestly

here's my fdisk output just in case:
(the drives in question are /dev/sda and /dev/sdb)

For storage drives, you can just write a filesystem: you don;t need anything else. You can also label the drives: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ext3#Assigning_a_label

yeah so I did that, but now both of my drives say that they're only 484.6MiB???
I'm only seeing that I have the filesystem partitions now so I'm not sure what could have caused this neutral

oh yeah also these are Ext4s not Ext3s just so we're clear
