Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

Since yesterday’s Plasma updates, my Dolphin file manager takes 8 seconds to open other folders. There is no console output.

This is what I see after launching Dolphin:

$ dolphin
kf.coreaddons: no metadata found in "/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/applications.so" "Failed to extract plugin meta data from '/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/applications.so'"
kf.coreaddons: no metadata found in "/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/desktop.so" "Failed to extract plugin meta data from '/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/desktop.so'"
kf.coreaddons: no metadata found in "/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/applications.so" "Failed to extract plugin meta data from '/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/applications.so'"
kf.coreaddons: no metadata found in "/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/desktop.so" "Failed to extract plugin meta data from '/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/desktop.so'"

I do not know if this is new or if Dolphin would have given this log before too.

My system is up to date. Tried downgrading plasma-framework and qt5-base with no luck.
This is my yesterday’s pacman.log:

Re: Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

However, Double Commander (doublecmd-qt5) does not have this problem.

I timed it and krusader takes 4 seconds to open any folder from root (/).  But, once in the folder (eg. /z-data1 which is a separate disk formatted with EXT4) then any lower folders open with no delay.
Dolphin has the same problem.  For the record my root folder is on an SSD with / and /home formatted with F2FS.

Re: Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

Did some digging and the two plugins referenced above (same for me) are owned by "plasma-workspace 5.22.4-3"

~$ pacman -Qo /usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/applications.so
/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/applications.so is owned by plasma-workspace 5.22.4-3

Which, on my system, was last updated on Sunday, August 8, 2021.  So, it seems that the last kde update missed this package or the update is pending.

Have you tried creating a clean account? Might be some config files that mess the things up? I run the latest update without issue (at least not that issue) smile

Re: Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

This delay is not present on a laptop and desktop I have that both use intel graphics.  Starting krusader from the command line on these machines produces the same output but the app starts immediately (i.e. the file system is presented).  The machine in question (an older AMD/AM4 with Nvidia 710 graphics card) has a fairly old Arch install whose only problem is this annoying delay with Dolphin/Krusader (and others?) but not Double Commander (doublecmd-qt5).  I am going to upgrade the intel desktop with a newer Nvidia graphics card (1030) and, hopefully, this problem will not recur.
I am using the proprietary nvidia driver (nvidia-utils-470.63.01-1).

No issues here either. You should generally reboot or otherwise ensure that the entire set of KDE libs is reloaded after frameworks updates, did you do that?

What's your output of

pacman -Qkk plasma-workspace kio dolphin

FWIW I do remember reading somewhere that there have been some issues with F2FS filesystems and current kernels, not sure anymore where I've read that though

Re: Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

tmoorman@aria:~$ sudo pacman -Qkk plasma-workspace kio dolphin krusader
[sudo] password for tmoorman:
plasma-workspace: 6762 total files, 0 altered files
kio: 1532 total files, 0 altered files
dolphin: 473 total files, 0 altered files
krusader: 571 total files, 0 altered files

I have not noticed any issues with f2fs on my ssd which has my root and home.  Anyway, f2fs problems would not explain why double commander is not affected.
I tried booting KDE Neon (neon-testing-20210810-1819.iso) and it will not boot on my 10 year old amd desktop but boots fine on the (newer) intel Z170 desktop.  This might be the final push to upgrade.

I'm getting the same exact same error output as frumble but no delay. This is on a pretty new Arch install on a pretty new machine too.

Re: Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

Getting a similar problem here all of a sudden.  Last time I used Plasma was probably about two weeks ago, maybe three, and there wasn't a problem then.

About a 200 or 300 ms delay between clicking a directory and navigating into it, as opposed to the previous behavior which was near instantaneous.

I'm using an EXT4 FS on an SSD for what it's work.

I’m using a btrfs /home on LUKS and still get ~8 sec delay between clicking on a folder and opening it and it’s not only in Dolphin but in all applications that make use of the Plasma file chooser.

Re: Since Plasma updates on 21-08-14, Dolphin t. ages to open folders [S]

stumbled on this issue myself but not sure if it's the same situation.. dolphin took a while to launch, but deleting /tmp/startkdeinitlock did the trick since I eventually would get a

kf.dbusaddons: 'kdeinit5' is taking more than 30 seconds to start.

error as well. I am still getting the same plugin output though

Using Intel built-in graphics and LTS kernel, no issues whatsoever.

Is everyone affected using nvidia?
What if you "export QT_OPENGL=software"?

I'm using nvidia, after exporting ... problem still exists.

Hi Guys,

I was having the same problem as yours (see this thread).  As mentioned in my third comment, I have just managed to solve it (with help) by downgrading 'kio' to v5.84.0-2.  Feel free to let me know how you go!

Thank you!! That is solving the problem for me too! Please let me know of the KDE Bugzilla entry.

@frumble:

Thanks for confirming that downgrading 'kio' works for you as well.  Accordingly, I have just filed a report (here) on the KDE bug tracker website.

My issue, no slowdowns just warning messages, was fixed after the update to kio 5.86.0.
