Monitor Display Issue on Boot

When i turn on my PC first and then turn my monitor on second the screen stays black and says Displayport is not detected during boot. I have to input my password at a black screen when i hear the gpu driver start and the fans slow down. I can log into KDE and the monitor will then be detected and display the DE. But if i turn my monitor on first then my PC second the display works fine and is detected right away during boot-up. I am not sure if it has to do with the Nvidia graphics card, xrandr, grub?

I can use my PC but its just a weird issue. I have tried what the wiki says about Nvidia and the DRM kernel mode setting. It doesn't work unless i am missing something. When i had fedora and windows both detected the monitor either way. I am on KDE with the most current updates to arch. Linux kernel is 5.13.12.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600x
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 2070 Super

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

I believe it has something to do with my monitors deep sleep function that gets detected as being off. Cant find a solution but could be an Nvidia driver issue.

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

stays black and says Displayport is not detected during boot. I have to input my password at a black screen

Where do you enter the password? SDDM?
When exactly do you turn on the output - if you do it fastenough™ after the system boots (ie. during the boot-phase and before SDDM actually shows up), does it then work as expected?
Also where does it say "Displayport is not detected"? Boot message or the monitor OSD?

X11 will by default enable all connected outputs when it starts, but if it starts before the output is connected, something else will have to do that (eg. an xrandr script)
You could start https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/x-on-resize/ in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup (and then kill it from your session startup scripts) if SDDM does't react here.

It might also be merely an issue of the server trying to configure the wrong resolution, in which case see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xrandr#Configuration

Alternatively some

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DP-1orwhatever"
    Option "Enable" "bool"
EndSection

might do (convincing the server that the output is connected), but if there's no output when the X11 server starts, that's useless.

If you need more help, please post your Xorg log.

Early KMS won't help you here (but is generally good t ohave enabled)

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

Your help was much appreciated. But i fixed it by going into my BIOS and changing the boot option in windows OS from UEFI to CSM for some reason that's related. I believe i changed that after changing Operating Systems. So the problem was not related to Arch or anything else but a setting i changed. The display is detected right away and the BIOS screen shows and i boot to GRUB. I just figured it might have been something i played around with in the BIOS.

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

Windows doesn't like if you change the BIOS mode after the installation.
Also please consider checking the 3rd link below to avoid future collisions between the two OS.

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

Both operating systems are on different drives and installed in a UEFI system. I disabled hibernate, and fast boot for windows. Windows was reinstalled with the option in bios on UEFI.
Monitor still doesnt get detected when the Boot windows OS setting is UEFI. Instead CSM mode will detect the monitor and display everything fine when booting Arch. Though it will show GRUB in a lower resolution.

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

That sounds more like a framebuffer resolution issue (w/ CSM probably resorting to a 80x25 VGA console?), try to enforce a resolution and/or disable the framebuffer console (if you don't want to juggle the BIOS mode)

Re: Monitor Display Issue on Boot

Thanks for the help. I tried but i will just stick with csm in the Windows OS boot configuration option. Theres another option in the bios that says boot and lets me pick UEFI. Don't understand the difference between these two options in the MSI motherboard bios. Guess one is specifically for the Windows OS that screws up the Linux boot.
