startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

Hi

I have a weird issue. I can start wayland (sway, plasma) just fine and I can start a nested X11 (i3, plasma) under wayland using Xephyr, but I do not get anything when I use xinit (or try to start an X session via sddm)..

At first I thought that my computer froze but it seems like it just stops feeding output to the screen since the .local/share/xorg/Xorg.0..log looks pretty normal I think?

It's working: what is it supposed to display? Post your .xinitrc.

Yes exactly that is what makes it weird. I do not get anything on my screen after

 Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

so somehow the graphics output is not fed to the screen after that point, but when I look at the log it looks fine...

This is my xinitrc

#!/usr/bin/zsh

export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE
export DESKTOP_SESSION=KDE

#exec startplasma-x11
exec i3

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

Your .xinitrc is broken in all sorts of ways: read the wiki article.

Thanks for the feedback. This tiny xinitrc was what has worked before (and works on Xephyr) but based on the Wiki page you recommended, I think it might be that I need a local .xserverrc and to specify vt. Pehaps is the graphics just feeding to another vt. I will check.

I tried copying the xinitrc from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but the outcome was the same (after changing the exec at the end of course)

EDIT:
the xserverrc idea did not work. I also tested starting sway on tty1 and switch to tty2 to start x. After graphics output got stuck I could not switch back to tty1. So it seems like what is fed to the monitor freezes (since the logs indicate that everything is working, including shutdown).

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

The problem will be "exec i3", either the executable doesn't exist or it crashes (or bails for other reasons)
Don't lie about XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP & DESKTOP_SESSION and see whether you can "exec xterm" (make sure xterm is installed)
And post the updated xinitrc.

Issues to run wayland next to X11 are probably unrelated to the original problem.

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

The XDG_CURRENT_SESSION and DESKTOP_SESSION is to get themes working. It does not do much else and has been working before (and works under Xephyr using startx).

I did as you said and the problem persists, sceen output freezes at

(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

and I can not switch tty.

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

This is different from the original log and stalls when xf86-video-amdgpu tries to init.
1. check the journal of the previous (stalling) boot for amdgpu kernel module errors
2. try to remove xf86-video-amdgpu (you'll be using the modesetting driver)
3. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start - esp. if you're autostarting startx

I thought xf86-video-amdgpu also was used on wayland and sway and plasma-wayland work perfectly... I rarely use the X session, but sometimes I need it (I have not figured out screen sharing via Teams on Wayland, and some Steam games seem to only run on X and not on Xwayland)

I tried to figure out which was the previous attempt, but it seems like everything is OK there too (journalctl -g amdgpu) and as far as I could see was each attempt looking the same.

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

OK TIL that xf86-video-amdgpu was not required for wayland. Eliminating this driver and trying to get x to start with xf86-video-ati did not work however.
The screen did not freeze but there was an error during X start.

Somewhere on your system there's a *.conf file that forces X to use the module from xf86-video-amd .

The first place to look for that file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?

I removed 20-amdgpu.conf from xorg.conf.d and got back to freezing screen output after startx (so the same as with amdgpu but now with ati/modesetting I guess)

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

[    47.420] (II) LoadModule: "ati"

pacman -Qs xf86-video

They're *not* used by wayland and the ati driver (which I assume the lonely puppy meant) is dogging on your GPU and will likely throw it off whack.
You probably want to get rid of all af the packages listed above, but let's see them first.

pacman -Qs xf86-video (after removing xf86-video-amdgpu and xf86-video-ati)

local/xf86-video-dummy 0.3.8-4 (xorg-drivers)
    X.org dummy video driver
local/xf86-video-fbdev 0.5.0-2 (xorg-drivers)
    X.org framebuffer video driver
local/xf86-video-vesa 2.5.0-1 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org vesa video driver

screen output froze again and I had to do a hard reboot with the power button like the other times,...

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

Get rid of the other packages as well.
Do you still have a wayland server on the other TTY?

No I have tried with and  without wayland on another tty but that makes no difference. Removed the rest of the xf86-video drivers, but it still got stuck

So the log looks OK but the screen is frozen and I had to do a hard reboot again...

Something I am starting to wonder : are the X drivers or the X server somehow touching IOMMU in a way that the wayland graphics drivers don't?

I have to boot with the kernel parameters 'nomodeset', iommu=soft, amd_iommu=off or pci=noats or it gets stuck in boot (so something with the graphics driver and iommu). I use pci=noats since this is the least invasive of the options as far as I could figure out based on what I read.

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

Does it work w/ iommu=soft?
The server now runs again, so the problem might show up in the ringbuffer (don't grep for amdgpu, could also be drm, iommu or whatnot else)

The same thing happens as if I do pci=noats, works perfectly for wayland but computer freezes up if I try to start X (either from a DM or with startx, nested using Xephyr under Wayland works).

I think I have tried almost all permutations of options (except nomodeset) that allow the system to boot and they all freeze up when I try to start X (but the log seems to continue and shows a nice shut down procedure ...).

Our generic list of kernelparameters for "amdgpu fails"

amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.audio=0 amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

Unfortunately "amdgpu.dc=0" might fail the boot completely by recent accounts…

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

Sorry about the late reply. I got busy unfortunately. I tested your suggestion and indeed doing amdgpu.dc=0 blocks boot. Doing all the others do not enable boot on their own. I still have to try them together with pci=noats or iommu=soft to see if they help with startx

EDIT:

now tested with pci=noats for all the other options except amdgpu.dc=0. The option amdgpu.dpm=0 also blocks boot. Using all the other options together with pci=noats does not help startx.

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

What if you don't re-use the current VT and/or disable the framebuffer console?

Re: startx no output to screen [SOLVED]

For posterity:

The issue got solved by an MSI EC firmware update.
