[SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing graphical glitches after recent update.

It's easy to observe when opening Konsole in full screen and running find on directory with lots of elements (so it needs time to traverse through content). While new entries scroll through I can see glitches.

This is something I did not see before today's update (though I was not updating for ~2 weeks so this could have been introduced by earlier update).

I'm on lenovo P53 laptop, this is Optimus setup (intel is the primary graphic card which serves my laptop screen, I don't use nvidia card for displaying things). I use plasma as my windows manager.

I do hope this is something caused by drivers and will be fixed in a few days, have no idea what to do about it if it's not caused by drivers.. Would appreciate any hints if anyone experienced this too.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

I have noticed some glitches too in lxqt. When changing a workspace, if a previous one has a window with a white background there is a noticeable glitch ("leftover") on the next workspace. I have HP laptop with intel uhd 621 graphic card. It is a recent mesa update to blame. As a temporary solution downgrade to mesa-21.1.6-1-x86_64 helped (versions 21.2.0 and 21.2.1 are affected). This could be also related to this bug.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

Thanks @kmiernik, indeed all is back to normal after downgrading mesa. I mark this post solved since by downgrading glitches are gone, though it will be really solved once bug linked by @kmiernik will be fixed.

Turning on the KDE compositor also appears to fix the issue for me FWIW.

Same here. The upstream bug seems to be fixed, waiting for the next mesa release..

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

Please note that this is not fixed in mesa-21.2.2 either.

mesa-21.2.3 - not fixed either. Should we perhaps do something about it? smile

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

The bug linked by @kmiernik is closed: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/5231

I have gone through full upgrade today and can confirm the problem is still there. I can see some improvement though, the number of glitches is less than what I was observing at the time of submitting this post.. Still, I am going to downgrade mesa and maybe leave a comment under issue linked above that I still see the problem... Since I cannot fix it myself, I can only report upstream.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

mesa 21.2.4-1 does not solve the problem, it seems worse than before upgrade, so I keep downgrading to 21.1.6-1.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

Afaik the fix for the bug you linked has never been backported to 21.2 not sure whether it ever will, maybe it'd help if someone that can reproduce mentions that there? Though I'd assume 21.3 to not be far out by now.

Downgrading to mesa-21.1.6-1-x86_64 also fixed the glitches on my thinkpad T450s with an Intel HD Graphics 5500

21.2.5-1 is also bad.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

Downgrading mesa isn't really working anymore. For example, this breaks alacritty which is not able to start now:

libEGL warning: MESA-LOADER: failed to open swrast: libLLVM-12.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (search paths /usr/lib/dri)

@kyak I've noticed this myself today. You have to downgrade the llvm package too, otherwise DRI3 is not working.

Yeah, but we are going down a slippery path now.

Had someone actually tried the above mentioned patch or the mesa-21.3 development branch to see if the glitches are gone?

That would be a shame if mesa-21.3 (which was just released) has the same problem and we didn't act during it's development resorting to an easy downgrade option sad

Re: [SOLVED] Graphical glitches after recent update

Looks like upgrading mesa to 21.3.1 solved the issue for me. I don't see glitches anymore and I don't have to ignore mesa anymore when upgrading my installation of Arch smile
