I installed i3-gaps on my old installation which had previously xfce4 but I removed all xfce4 packages , now it it has just i3 and it's related packages .
I am starting i3 by adding just one line to .xinitrc file i.e
exec i3
and do startx but Everytime I get error
-bash : startxfce4 : command not found and so login to i3 does not work .
Would appreciate some guidance here to fix this issue .

You probably need to remove (or comment) xfce4 related lines .
Please post your ~/.xinitrc
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Your xinitrc is still broken.
Is ~/.config/i3/startup.sh the last code block you posted?

Bingo!
Thank you and you were right and I don`t know how or why my .bashrc has a line
alias startx=startxfce4 which I commented out and now I can startx to i3 .
Just to add to here instead of starting a new thread , on current stock kernel I can not use any login manager to login to i3 but only startx , with a login manager in few seconds I am back to login manager login window . This issue does not occur on current lts version of kernel available on repos . Any clue what is the reason for this issue?
