Did and update recently - and since then have only been able to play DVD to about 50% of the way through. Then they stall.
I have changed the DVD player in the computer - that made no difference.
I've tried mpv and vlc - that made no difference
I've downgraded mpv and libdvd* to the previous version I had from 2020 - that made no difference.
So I'm at an end here - what on earth is stopping dvds playing?
Any thoughts anyone?
If it helps, VLC says "main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late (jitter of 25459 ms ignored)" and as you can just increases jitter - not that this helps.

"Play DvD" or "Play DvDs"?
When was the last time you played that DvD?
Is it maybe a bit gritty?
=> Soft microfiber cloth, from the center to the outside. NOT in circles.
If this is really down to a SW update, I'd try the LTS kernel.

Did you tried playing by mplayer in console, like:
mplayer dvd://1and see what error messages mplayer (or other player) will produce?
Or play directly vob files on DVD by any player: mplayer, mpv, vlc?

How old are the dvd drives?
How do the DvDs look (it's an optical medium - you can see whether there're going to be problems …;-)
One thing I assume could cross you is some power saving (is this a notebook?)
Can you dd the Disc into a file on your HDD (or just /dev/null)?
Offline
The DVDs that are failing (Delicatessen and Rabbit-Proof Fence) are quite old - I originally ripped them in a mixture of mpeg/x264 - I'm now redoing my movies in x265/av1. Ultra Violet which worked is only a few years old. As all dvds originally ripped, there are fairly spotless - can't see any faults.
The DVD player that was originally giving errors, was a Toshiba Samsung SU-208 from 2015 - replaced with one off ebay that I got a few years ago, not sure its age or type, and its deep in the computer right now so can't check.
No the computer isn't going into power saving - its a low powered desktop from 10 years ago, AMD E350 machine.
I'll try dd the dvd - not sure if I can with encryption - but I'll give it a go.
Offline
And another duff DVD, Dune. I can check the dates on the original rip - and they are all from 2011, so the DVD are all at least 10 years old ...
