upon trying to fix some things, I decided to uninstall forked picom and installed the normal one. Deleted the config as well but even with the config gone, it says it does not support the blur methods im passing in (kawase or dual_kawase) and fails to create a new session.

If you removed the rounded corners in awesome but the issue remained, that's probably not gonna help.
You should be able to float individual windows anytime, though?
Hey again, looks like we were doomed to fail to fix this no matter what. Seemed like my original picom config was screwed from the very beginning. I reset picom to its original form and switched back to forked one. Shadows worked with original picom but the forked one has this comment here about shadows image... do you know if this could possibly somehow help in the solution of this issue?

I literally feel so stupid rn lmao. All I had to do was switch the shadows option in wintypes(usually found at the bottom of the config) to true. Everything seems to work now lmao.
