This could probably belong in newbie corner just as readily, but anyway, so embarrassing...
I wanted to make my new install to a Lenovo Thinkpad T550 super-slick by making use of the fingerprint sensor, so I followed the wiki:
My device, per lsusb:
Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS 5011 fingerprint sensor
is listed as supported.
I added the following line to /etc/pam.d/system-local-login (at the top):
auth sufficient pam_fprintd.so
I also tried it with line at the top instead:
auth sufficient pam_unix.so try_first_pass likeauth nullok
I start my machine to the console, then use startx to launch an i3 session as set up in .xinitrc.
Now whenever I start up, I get to the console login prompt, I don't need to enter a password or scan a finger. Yikes!
This is true even after reverting the above file to its original state.
Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT:
I will mark this solved, even though I am not one hundred percent sure about the original cause of the issue. The fix for this was a step I stumbled upon in the wiki page for the fingerprint-gui package. Basically, that page mentioned logging out and back in to make configs take effect (whereas I had previously rebooted, thinking that ought have the same effect). Anyway, after repeating the fprint wiki steps _and_ logging out / back in, things worked as expected.
