Thread locking

What is the policy on locking topics?

I'm not clear on why this was locked: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=25738
The topic probably should have gone in OTW instead of Arch discussions but it was a valid discussion topic.

I am aware that debates usually don't change anyones mind, but there are benefits to them nonetheless (such as gaining new perspectives, etc). I don't see why locking would be necessary unless it turned into personal insults.

Re: Thread locking

We usually don't lock so proactively, but a) I took the OP's statement as a hint on his own feelings on the topic, b) I thought this topic was being discussed somewhere, and c) one of our members has unexpectedly left the team and I'm going on vacation for two weeks; the remaining FAs are going to be a bit short-handed for dealing with the inevitable flareups.

Re: Thread locking

Also, it appeared that xterminus was saying "ah crap this might get bad" in the last post.  If it was locked in error the OP can always PM a moderator.

Re: Thread locking

Ok. In that particular case I was disappointed because he misinterpreted some of my comments and I didn't get to respond. It was not too important and life goes on. I don't care enough to have the thread re-opened so I guess this is basically a non-issue. smile
