[Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

For the past couple of months, I have been unable to start nvidia-settings and conky fails to read the GPU (which causes it not to start automatically). This had all been working previously, but I don't remember the exact versions of nvidia drivers and kernels at which it stopped working.

I haven't found any obvious issues or errors in log files.

Would really appreciate any help investigating this! I don't know where to look to figure out where the problem is.

Thanks!

The problems
nvidia-settings won't start

> nvidia-settings -V
ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system

conky doesn't start automatically. When started manually, this error message appears in the console and conky does not display any info from the GPU.

conky: print_nvidia_value: NV-CONTROL X extension not present

System info
I am currently running arch zen, but I have the same issue in the standard and lts kernels. I am running wayland and gnome.

> uname -r
5.14.6-zen1-1-zen

GPU is found and is on. This is a desktop with an  AMD Ryzen 7 3700X that does not have a GPU, so the Nvidia card is the only GPU. I do not have nvidia-prime installed (and installing nvidia-prime did not work for me, as it did for another user https://github.com/brndnmtthws/conky/issues/928 )

Re: [Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

You're running gnome on wayland and xwayland, try w/ gnome on x11/xorg.

Re: [Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

Thank you, seth, I didn't think of that.

Switching to x11 did indeed fix these issues (see https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … ack-to-x11). I suppose my problems arose when Nvidia started (trying) to support Wayland. Before that, maybe these things were working via xwayland.

Kind of disappointing; I thought the 470 nvidia drivers should be working well with wayland.

Re: [Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

I guess the problem is that some X11 clients want to control the GPU which is running on wayland, though.
About conky: what actually in conky does query the chip and why is it not nvidia-smi? (Are you polling nvidia-settings? Don't - it's very slow)

Re: [Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

The conky lua script I have is using nvidia-smi as far as I can see: https://github.com/philer/polycore/blob … a.lua#L165. Not sure why it wasn't working.

Re: [Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

function data.gpu_frequency()
    return tonumber(loader:get("${nvidia gpufreq}"))
end

?

Seems to be some external script?

Re: [Solved] nvidia-settings and conky issues but drivers seem to work

I think that's parsing the cached result of nvidia-smi. The loader is defined earlier in the script.

In any case, I'll keep watching for better nvidia compatibility with wayland...
