Getting FIngerprint Reader to work (Thinkpad Carbon X1 5th gen)

I've had my Thinkpad for a month or two and in all this time I have not figured out how to enable the fingerprint reader. It doesn't appear in Gnome Settings and I tried some packages like thinkfinger and they have not worked for me. Can anyone figure out how to get the fingerprint reader working on this device?

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Checked around that page and after trying all packages, including the one made for this model of fingerprint reader, nothing works.

Can you be more specific? Is there any sort of error message or anything? What are the exact steps you're following?

I have a Lenovo Carbon X1 gen 8 and I was able to get fprintd to work (and now use it to authenticate when I use 'sudo' which is extremely convenient). I'm happy to try to help but don't know if you've given enough detail for us to understand smile
