Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

Hi everyone,
Just installed Arch on my new computer and I'm having an issue: the resolution is at 1400x1050 by default (instead of 1929x1980) on both monitor, and I can set the HDMI monitor to 1920x1080 with xrandr but not for the display port one (and adding a mode doesn't work).

======================================
Setup info

Monitors: ViewSonic VA2432-MHD Adaptive Sync
One is connected by DP, the other with HDMI.

GPU : XFX Radeon RX 5600 XT
driver: amdgpu

Kernel: linux-zen
======================================

Searching the internet, I have found a config for xorg, which set the correct resolution for the DP monitor but disable the HDMI:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf :

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "DisplayPort-0"
	Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 172.80 1920 2040 2248 2576 1080 1081 1084 1118 -HSync +Vsync
	Option "PreferredMode" "1920_1080_60.00"
	Option "LeftOf" "HDMI-A-0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "HDMI-A-0"
	Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 172.80 1920 2040 2248 2576 1080 1081 1084 1118 -HSync +Vsync
	Option "PreferredMode" "1920_1080_60.00"
	Option "RightOf" "DisplayPort-0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen 0"
	Device "AMDGPU"
	Monitor "HDMI-A-0"
	DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "AMDGPU"
  Driver "amdgpu"
EndSection

I also added amdgpu in kernel modules in /etc/mkinitgpio.conf.

I've been stucked for hours, any help would be appreciated.

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

ViewSonic VA2432-MHD Adaptive Sync

AMD cards only support freesync[1] .
Also https://www.amd.com/en/products/freesync-monitors doesn't list the VA2432 as supported .

The product sheet for your monitors[2] doesn't mention G-sync or FreeSync , I suggest you check with the manufacturer how well that model works with amd cards.

Welcome to archlinux forums.

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

Hi,
Thanks for answering.
My monitors support AdaptiveSync, which is made to be compatible with both G-sync and FreeSync (for what I understood).

Under Windows (I'm in dual boot), everything works well. But only the main monitor (HDMI) is configured to use AdaptiveSync because the second monitor is plugged with DP 1.1 which doesn't support Adaptive/G-/FreeSync.
It might be related, now that I'm thinking about it. I'll have a look in the weekend, and tell you what I found.

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

I tried different settings on both monitors, no parameters seems to solve the issue.
This is the EDID decode of the DP display :

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

Nothing suspicious in the EDID.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf should not be necessary, please remove it.
Also remove the 10-monitor.conf, then restart X (rebooting is also fine) and post xorg log[1] as well as xrandr -q output .

Your card is to new for that driver, remove xf86-video-ati .

No other things that standout, hopefully xrandr -q output helps.

Just uninstalled xf86-video-ati, I keep you in touch.
And thanks a lot for the time you're spending answering to me.

EDIT : I put MODULES=(amdgpu) in mkinitcpio.conf, don't know if I wrote it
EDIT2: Uninstalled xf86-video-ati, nothing changed after a restart

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

Did you regenerate your image after adding the MODULES=(amdgpu) line with mkinitcpio -P ?

Yes I did, and I checked with lspci -v:  the driver in use is amdgpu

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

But only the main monitor (HDMI) is configured to use AdaptiveSync because the second monitor is plugged with DP 1.1 which doesn't support Adaptive/G-/FreeSync.

Can you try with a HBR2 (DisplayPort 1.2) or better cable ?

Do things change if you switch the monitors ?

EDIT2: Uninstalled xf86-video-ati, nothing changed after a restart

That is as expected since X wasn't using it anyway.
Removal does simplify the setup and make the log more readable though.

I don't have a DP 1.2, but I'll ask a friend.

Lone_Wolf wrote:

Nope, but I ran some tests with interesting results :
1) With only one monitor connected,
    - the screen resolution is correct with HDMI on both monitor
    - but incorrect with the DP
2) With both monitor connected (one with HDMI, the other with DP), the resolution is wrong even if I switch them.

The obviously, the problem is coming from the DP cable. I'll try with a DP 1.2 if I can, but seems strange that Arch struggle with it where Windows just handles it (not a fan of Windows, btw). I'll also try with a live USB of Manjaro, to see if it finds the good parameters.

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

but seems strange that Arch struggle with it where Windows just handles it

There are tricks (like interlacing and reduced blanking) to work around hardware / edid limitations using custom modelines.
As far as I know X doesn't use them by default, but some windows drivers do.

If you want to experiment, install cvt12-git from AUR and check it's help output.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Sorry for the late reply.

It works! I tried cvt-12 as you said with the following commands :

cvt12 1920 1080 60 -b -o
xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00_rb2" 133.19 1920 1928 1960 2000 1080 1097 1105 1111 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode DisplayPort-0 "1920x1080_60.00_rb2"

Not sure I picked the most optimized settings though...

-b is for "Use CVT 1.2 "Reduced Blanking" timings, this is more precise.Allows any refresh rate."
and -o "hange refresh rate for better video support. Requires -b (ie. converts 24hz to 23.976hz) This is the same as passing 23.976 without -o, -o does the calculation for you."

Anyway, thanks a lot ! I can finally switch to Arch, was sick of Windows.

EDIT : Any chance to apply the modeline early in boot process? Not a requirement, but it would be great.

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

If the EDID doesn't list the correct modleine, there is  a way to force the kernel to use  a custom edid

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … s_and_EDID

Incase the EDID does list the resolution there may be other reasons why it's not used.

example :
My monitor is 2560x1440 @59.95 resolutuion and this is listed in its EDID.
the firmware of the motherboard however reports a max of FULLHD 1920x1080 for EFI boot .

linux KMS/drm driver uses that for text mode and I have not found any way to override it.
X has no problems switching to the correct resolution.

Re: Dual-monitor HDMI/DisplayPort with amdgpu : wrong resolution

Hi,

My Radeon RX 560 works with AMDGPU (open source) only when kernel parameter amdgpu.dc=0 was set.

To do so, I've writed this parameter in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT grub argument (check /etc/default/grub file.
