FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

I have moved all beryl packages to the unstable repository. They have been removed from my repo and from AUR.

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

I am not really sure what beryl-dbus does (if anything). I just saw that all dbus dependencies have been removed from the other beryl-* packages (which is a good thing). I didn't add vidcap yet, it doesn't seem to be a complete thing anyway.

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

I only get a white cube, that I can spin, with the emerald icon on top.

I use XGL from Danimoth and the beryl stuff from testig, did the LD_PRELOAD trick to the mesa-xgl-svn library to load bery-xgl (see beryl forum).
However, I can't get it to work together.

ATi fglrx driver (mobility radeon 9600)

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Blind

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

Afaik Beryl only works with the new Nvidia beta drivers, so there is no need for the XGL stuff anymore. I had the same problems until upgrading to the newest beta drivers..

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

Oh, I think you are talking about AIGLX, which started to work with the new NVidia beta drivers.
However, I have an ATi Radeon 9600 card, and thus are stuck with their proprietory drivers. AIGLX doesnt work with these (or the open source) drivers, so I am stuck with XGL for now, until the situation improves (it looks as if ATi would have a lot to do if they wanted to support AIGLX).
It seems that XGL just works fine, but beryl has a problem - I can get beryl to work without XGL - but in my eyes that's kinda pointless...

So thank you for your answer, but unfortunately, it doesn't apply to me... sad

Cheers,
Blind

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

I have no windows decoration with Beryl/Emerald.
I use the nvidia-beta drivers and I tried with gnome and kde.

I just followed the wiki...

Here is my beryl.log:

This is a common misconception.

Open source ATI drivers do work.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and I'm currently in Beryl on AIGLX as I write this. Works perfectly. big_smile

There're some threads about getting DRI and composite working with
the open source drivers, check those out. Once you've got that working
you should be good to go installing beryl.

One thing though, for me pre-built packages never work, I have to compile out of SVN.

I get no window decorations with Beryl, here is the output from the command line (see below for my xorg.conf, audaly, what did you change in your xorg.conf?):

This is a common misconception.

You are right - I got it to work even with the beryl from unstable in AIGLX. The open source driver with AIGLX driver seems to heat up my laptop considerably, though. When I once used XGL the opposite was the case, actually, which was the effect I was hoping for.
Do you experience this as well?

hmm...I'm currently running a desktop so it's harder for me to notice
temperature changes. I've been meaning to set up some ACPI temp
monitoring but haven't gotten around to it.

I guess it's possible that the drivers would be heating up your graphics
chipset, but I'm not sure why that would be.

Oh, I think you are talking about AIGLX, which started to work with the new NVidia beta drivers.

You are wrong. New NVIDIA drivers _doesn't_ use AIGLX. NVIDIA have their own implementation of accelerated indirect rendering, AIGLX is another implementation (useful only for opensource DRI drivers). In fact NVIDIA have supported accelerated indirect rendering even long before AIGLX came into existence. The only missing thing for OpenGL compositing window managers (like Beryl or Compiz) was GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap OpenGL extension.

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

Oh, thanks for the clarification.
I always thought that AIGLX was the layer translating between graphics card drivers and OpenGL managers.

I have moved all beryl packages to the unstable repository. They have been removed from my repo and from AUR.

Automatically

I (big_gie) made a simple script to fetch the PKGBUILDs from aur and change the "_svntrunk" variable. I've made another one to automatically call "versionpkg" for each one. Just download and run :

cd /path/to/where/you/want/beryl/built
wget http://nbigaouette.inrs-emt.homelinux.n … ld,update}
chmod +x {fetch_pkgbuild,update}
./fetch_pkgbuild
./update

but can't build anymore after svn-6xx, pls check thanks.

Afaik Beryl only works with the new Nvidia beta drivers, so there is no need for the XGL stuff anymore. I had the same problems until upgrading to the newest beta drivers..

Wrong. beryl works with nvidia and aiglx. There is a separate beryl-xgl binary in the beryl-core-svn package that works with Xgl.

For any packaging bugs or other arch-related errors with beryl, use the arch bugtracker now. For other beryl bugs, just wait until beryl becomes more stable.

Re: FYI: Beryl packages in unstable

vidcap is now in [unstable] too. it is a video capture plugin for beryl, you can make nice videos demonstrating your effects, showing off to your friends. You need a fast GPU/CPU though to make good videos.

Just enable the plugin (see beryl settings). It will save a .seom file. You can easily make an avi using mencoder:

$ seom-filter beryl-capture.seom | mencoder - -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1200 -o beryl-capture.avi

Maybe play with mencoder settings. This may also be possible with other video encoders.
