Internal microphone not detected by alsa

I have just installed archlinux on a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. The internal microphone seems not to be detected, but the microphone of a headset is detected and works normally.

I have debugged the issue with alsamixer to no avail.

Some relevant commands, executed while

arecord -vvv -f dat /dev/nul

is being run:

$ uname -a

It seems, from the output of

pacmd list-sources

, that the internal microphone is not available:

	ports:
		analog-input-internal-mic: Internal Microphone (priority 8900, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)
			properties:
				device.icon_name = "audio-input-microphone"
		analog-input-mic: Microphone (priority 8700, latency offset 0 usec, available: yes)
			properties:
				device.icon_name = "audio-input-microphone"
	active port: <analog-input-mic>

But how can I make it available for the system?

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

What are these outputs without the headset plugged in? It's generally normal that the internal mic logically disables itself if an external headset is plugged.

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

I'm not sure I understand your comment... yes, when the headset is plugged the internal mic disables itself, and the headset mic works normally. But I would expect that when no external headset is plugged in the internal mic is enabled. However, it's not, and that's why I posted those outputs.

According to pacmad list-sources it seems that the internal mic is not even available.

How can I make archlinux see the internal mic?

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

pacmd comes with pulseaudio , are you trying to configure a "pure" alsa system or one where pulseaudio handles audio ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

I'm intending to use pulseaudio. I wrote in the title of the post that alsa doesn't detect the mic because if I uninstall pulseaudio the internal mic is still not detected; that makes me think that the problem has to do with alsa (or kernel modules, or drivers, I don't know).

I have used pacmd for the outputs because I don't know how to show otherwise that the system is not detecting the internal mic. But you are right, perhaps these outputs are misleading.

Thanks

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

The reason I asked this way because this output reads like an external mic is "constantly" being detected, if you get this output without the external mic actually plugged in then your jack sensing is broken.

Check whether you can enforce this logically from within pulse with

pacmd set-source-port alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo analog-input-internal-mic

and then testing recording with an actual pulse tool

parec -d  alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo  --file-format=wav test.wav

for completeness sake, the information from an

arecord -lL

would be more interesting for an ALSA view rather than aplay.

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

Wow, even after reading again the outputs I don't know how you figured out that the external mic is constantly being detected. The thing is, my jack sensing is faulty, so it might perfectly be that. On the Windows partition the internal mic does work, but maybe Windows performs different checks.

I ran pacmd set-source-port but got the same result as always.

I have almost decided that the problem is on the jack sensing, but would like to make sure, is there a way to check that this is the problem?

Thanks for the note on

arecord -lL

, I'll post here the results just for completeness as well:

Re: Internal microphone not detected by alsa

I'm not sure if you managed to fix it yet or not, however, I see ALC256 in your outputs and I had the same issue with my LG Gram with ALC256 and thank God it is all fixed now after a few tough days of researching and trial and error. It is a major issue by the way that has been present for years now.

Here is a written guide on how to fix it, it is a cross-distro solution as far as I know: https://askubuntu.com/a/1406919/1593265
and here is a video tutorial if you need to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz6jDUyn7S0

At your own risk though, watch the video first to see the end results and the process if uncertain.
I know the thread is old, but just in case someone frequents it again and they are in need of this solution smile Cheers.
