Activities button and search bar are missing

Hello guys,

i worked a few months now with arch and i have to say its really nice and well performing. But now i faced an issue, i got a new computer for work with pre-installed arch.
The thing is, the activities-button on the left in the topbar is missing. What is also missing, is the search-bar, when clicking the button (opt / start) for opening the activities overview. The dock is also missing.

When i press the "opt / start / windows"-button, the interface looks like this:

Can you help me please? What can i do? I reviewed a lot of issues á la "activities overview not working / missing / broken" / "activities search bar missing" but none of them were describing my current issue or fixing it.

I am on "5.13.5-arch1-1" and using gnome-shell "40.5". Which package-versions or config-file should i provide?

Kind regards
digitalgopnik

Re: Activities button and search bar are missing

Looks like you're running gnome-flashback? Or maybe booted into gnome classic?

Regardless, for pre-installed systems, you probably want to seek support with whoever set up the system, because we don't know how the system was set up and you likely don't know either.

Re: Activities button and search bar are missing

@Ammako: Thanks for you quick reply and your help!
You were right. That is really embarrassing for me sad Sorry for that.
It was gnome-classic. I don't how the pc could boot into that. Anyway. If someone will face the same issues in the future, simply execute

printf 'Desktop: %s\nSession: %s\n' "$XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP" "$GDMSESSION"

to check, which window-manager is currently activated.

In case of

Desktop: GNOME
Session: gnome-classic

you are using gnome-classic and should remove it, so it won't be listed under

/usr/share/xsessions

Re: Activities button and search bar are missing

Assuming you have one, your display manager should give you the option to choose between Gnome and Gnome Classic before logging in, and it should remember your previous choice (that might depend on the DM though.)
