Mouse ceased working after 2.6.18-7 - no idea where to start

Ok, sadly there are a number of variables that could have affected this so I hope this is the right forum.

Yesterday I took the 2.6.18-7 kernel update, but did not reboot.  Today I finally decided to replace my power supply as the old one had a fan that had seen better days.

After reconstructing my computer, I found the mouse ceased to work (it's been working without fuss for more than 2 years).  Note this is the first reboot with the new kernel, but I've been running 2.6.18 since that came out without problems (well once I fixed my grub config).

If I dual-boot to Windows the mouse works.  I tried it without the KVM and it still didn't work on linux, but does on windows (and I'm typing this now on the other machine hooked to the KVM).

It is a USB mouse hooked to a USB to PS/2 adapter, currently going through a KVM.

Any ideas for what to try?  I tried to plug in a USB mouse but I've never used any USB devices on this machine so I'm not surprised that didn't work (lsusb gives no output whatsoever).

Try running as root hwd -s
It should give you a display like this if your USB is running:

USB : VIA Technologies Inc.|VT82C586B USB module: uhci_hcd

Also notice that the module that goes with it is shown. Perhaps there is a missing kernel module for your mouse?

Had a similar problem. It seems that with the new kernel, my mouse would not run unless I loaded the "psmouse" module.
A simple

 modprobe psmouse

did it for me.
I also added "psmouse" to the modules section in rc.conf so it would load at startup.
