As far as i can tell, all i did was comment the lines launching the i3 status bar in my i3 config and add the autostart script for polybar, but somehow now my terminals now look like this. tried both alacritty and xterm, both look exactly the same.

as you can see in this image, that is pretty far from what i specified in my alacritty.yml config.

anyone familiar with this bug, if it is one? how can i fix it? yes, i have restarted i3, launched many new terminals and rebooted the whole system. ive also removed the polybar and put the i3 status bar back, still the same. if you need any screenshots of configs or command outputs, ask for them, your help is greatly appreciated

also, note that all other windows, gtk apps, firefox, whatever, still look like they are supposed to. its just terminal emulators.

sorry for the inconveniaence, i know what the problem is. dont know why i3 changed my default terminal to xterm, but alacritty is fine.

Please be more specific than
comment the lines launching the i3 status bar
Provide your actual config file and specify exactly what you have changed.
The image of xterm looks like a default xterm. How did you configure it beforehand? Xterm is normally configured through Xresources.
If you didin't configure it why do you expect it to not look like the default?
Where is your Alacritty config located? Have you moved it accidentally?
How does your polybar script look like?
I don't suspect i3 to be the culprit here, only that the wrong configuration became apparent after the changing the i3 config.
Also please don't bump your thread, edit your last post instead.
Edit: If you have solved your problem please mark the thread as solved.

OP: can you please edit the title back to something meaningful and then apply the "SOLVED" tag? There is nothing wrong with solving your own problem and/or realizing it was a simple thing to fix. Keeping the title may help others with the same problem - also see: Life is a two-way street
