The first 2 monitors are working. There is a black screen on 6 out of 8. You can see the cursor and you can move the windows to black screens. Where did I go wrong?

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

Your desktop shell doesn't use them.
1. what is your desktop
2. did you install face-xrandr?
3. what's the output of "xrandr -q"?

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

xinerama conflicts w/ xrandr, which is why you need the fake one.
I guess plasma semi-hard relies on xrandr (a lot of clients do these days) and that's the root of your problems.

That being said: https://github.com/phillipberndt/fakexrandr/issues
Doesn't look like this is gonna be a smooth sailing either…

Edit: without xinerama you're not gonna be able to combine the GPUs, BaseMosaic allows for only 2 GPUs to be combined and 3 outputs total, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Base_Mosaic

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

I checked the FakeXRandR solution. This divides the monitor into many. This solution will work for me if Xinerama works. Currently she is not working.

What is the reason I can't turn it on?

As I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf I have it

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

As I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf I have it

As formentioned, w/o xinerama you're not gonna be able to use all GPUs let alone outputs. So this is a non-starter.

W/ xinerama you had

You can see the cursor and you can move the windows to black screens.

what means the outputs were active and attached to the server display (because you could move windows around)

The only obstacle is that your DE doesn't play ball and add some desktop windows and panels there (maybe ignores the "dead" area for initial window placement as well) but that's an issue w/ the desktop environment, not X11, and I'm pretty sure that it's because plasma tries to query xrandr for the available outputs. Thus the fakexrandr thing.

Can you write something more? Can it be fixed? I need a clue

Is this the moment when I am supposed to get used to it that nothing will come of it?

The fix is to fake xrandr on top of xinerama…

Don't randomly inject sudo - especially where it's counterproductive…

In this case, I made every attempt (with and without sudo). How can I fix the above errors?

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

Try to use the CLI version, "fakexrandr-manage help" - the error looks like pygtk complaining about the XRANDR extension not being loaded (yeah, no shit…)
Also what's the output of "ldd /usr/bin/xrandr"? (The fake xrandr library is supposed to shadow the actual one)

libXrandr.so.2 => /usr/lib/fakexrandr/libXrandr.so.2 (0x00007fc757440000)

I still have

That's just a warning and should be irrelevant. Do you get a help message and more importantly, can you configure the fake randr setup with the CLI interface?

I have

fakexrandr-manage help
/usr/bin/fakexrandr-manage:37: PyGIWarning: Gtk was imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0') before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
  from gi.repository import Gtk, Gdk
fakexrandr manage script
Syntax: fakexrandr-manage <gui|dump-config|show-available|clear-config|
                           set-config>

Available commands:
  gui
    Run the GTK based gui
  dump-config
Dump the configuration file in a parseable format to the console. Different
configurations are separated by an empty line.
  show-available
Query XRandR and show outputs for which a configuration could be created.
  clear-config
   Remove all stored configurations
  set-config
Load configurations from the standard input and merge them into the
   configuration file

Configuration format:
The CLI configuration format follows sh syntax and defines the variables NAME,
EDID, WIDTH, HEIGHT and SPLITS. SPLITS is a string describing how an output
shall be split. It starts by one of the letters H, V or N, describing the
kind of split. H means horizontal, V vertical and N no split. Separated by a
space follows the pixel position of the split. Again separated by a space
follow the two sub-configurations of the left/right or top/bottom halves. Any
additional white-space besides a single space is optional any only serves
better readibility. dump-config indents sub-configurations to this end.
If SPLITS equals N, a configuration is discarded upon saving it.

Edit

fakexrandr-manage show-available

The only obstacle is that your DE doesn't play ball and add some desktop windows and panels there (maybe ignores the "dead" area for initial window placement as well) but that's an issue w/ the desktop environment, not X11, and I'm pretty sure that it's because plasma tries to query xrandr for the available outputs. Thus the fakexrandr thing.

I replaced KDE → XFCE. All 8 monitors have been cheered up. I am currently working on XFCE (it doesn't suit me very well, but I have no choice, I have to work).

Will replacing graphics cards help? Maybe it is worth buying a card with SLI support? Can it give up Nvidia at all? Only in return what to buy?

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

"Prediction is difficult- particularly when it involves the future."
nvidia got some shade since they seem to no longer provide SLI profiles and that means they *might* give up on the technology.

What to do depends on what you actually want.
If it's only about a lot of displays, you could daisy-chain them via DP on a single GPU.
If you want a super-large monitor, why not "abuse" 1 or 2 4k TVs?

As an addendum:

https://http.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/325.15/README/xconfigoptions.html wrote:

Option "BaseMosaic" "boolean"
This option can be used to extend a single X screen transparently across display outputs on each GPU. This is like SLI Mosaic mode except that it does not require a video bridge connected to the graphics cards. Due to this Base Mosaic does not guarantee there will be no tearing between the display boundaries. Base Mosaic is supported on SLI configurations up to three display devices. It is also supported on Quadro FX 380, Quadro FX 580 and all non-mobile NVS cards on all available display devices.

Use this in conjunction with the MetaModes X configuration option to specify the combination of mode(s) used on each display. nvidia-xconfig can be used to configure Base Mosaic via a command like nvidia-xconfig --base-mosaic --metamodes=METAMODES where the METAMODES string specifies the desired grid configuration. For example, to configure four DFPs in a 2x2 configuration, each running at 1920x1024, with two DFPs connected to two cards, the command would be:

    nvidia-xconfig --base-mosaic --metamodes="GPU-0.DFP-0: 1920x1024+0+0, GPU-0.DFP-1: 1920x1024+1920+0, GPU-1.DFP-0: 1920x1024+0+1024, GPU-1.DFP-1: 1920x1024+1920+1024"

Since you do have quadro cards and the wiki says the output limitation only exists for geforce cards, you might want to try your luck w/ BaseMosaic again.

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

I turned on the "BaseMosaic" mode. It helped in a way, but I have a problem with the settings.

I can't put two rows (4 monitors each). Kscreen has rules of its own and does not recognize /etc/X11/xorg.conf configurations

Well, I have ↓

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

# nvidia-xconfig: version 390.144 (dvs-builder@U64-P10-09) Wed Jun 2 22:56:57 UTC 2021

Well, I try to set my Kscreen settings according to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Unfortunately, I do not accept them, I still have one row ↓

Why is this happening? Why doesn't Kscreen understand my settings?

I tried to make the correct changes to the file and it didn't help. These are the correct settings that I made directly in the file.

I tried to find out my settings from the KDE panel in Kscreen. It didn't help either. If I could have two rows, the problem would be solved. How can this be done?

Re: [RESOLVED] Black monitors when Xinerama is turned on

If your xorg.conf works in theory you could also just disable kscreen, no? You can disable the kscreen daemon in

kcmshell5 kcmkded

which should make things honor your xorg.conf (... not sure whether there'd be invalid assumptions on KWins side in that case, but for keeping a specific monitor config you should be able to try and disable that)

Saw the post → https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=6 … 59#p418608. I did that too, but for me it left only 1 monitor turned on, so.. ↓

@seth I want to thank you for your help, for your time. I helped me with this post

nvidia got some shade since they seem to no longer provide SLI profiles and that means they *might* give up on the technology.

On nVidia, I turned on "Base Mosaic". I insisted and endlessly set up the ".local/share/kscreen/eb07a57d225ff2047d4bffd5dc9a73b0" file until Screen finally understood my configuration.

@seth thank you for taking me by the hand and leading me through this difficult journey <3
