GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

I'm trying to do the GPU passthrough using QEMU/KVM. I followed PCI passthrough via OVMF , and I do get all the right outputs from the host side (vfio settings). But when I add the PCI device via virt-manager, I get the following error

Re: GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

How many and which videocards are in your host system ? please post lspci -k output .

Which videocard are you trying to passthrough ?

also full dmesg please.

Are host and guest both running archlinux ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

I have two GPUs installed in my system (1) AMD Radeon Pro WX3200 and (2) AMD Radeon Pro W5700, and I am trying to pass W5700 to the VM.

Output of lspci -k (from the host)

And yes, host and the guest are running Arch Linux

No idea what they mean though, let's check some basic things.

Does the guest have linux-firmware installed ?

This appears to be a desktop with a threadripper pro processor and 2 discrete videocards built by lenovo .
Which model is it and are you running latest EFI firmware version ?

Which physical pci express slots are the videocards installed in ?

Please post the output from the script at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PCI_pa … _are_valid .

The xml file created by libivrt for this may also be useful .

[1] Even on a multi processor system that runs a bare metal hypervisor, I expect the hypervisor to handle microcode loading , not guests .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

Okay, I will remove the amd-ucode from the bootloader.

Yes. Guest have linux-firmware installed.

CPU model is Threadripper Pro 3945WX, and for the EFI version are you asking the host or the guest? For the guest I am using the UEFI by edk2-ovmf. For the host I have not updated the firmware yet, but I am sure it supports IOMMU since it was enabled by default.

Graphics cards are by AMD, not Lenovo. Though, WX3200 came with the host machine, and W5700 was added in later. So, the subvendor information of WX3200 is listed as Lenovo, and for the W5700 it is listed as Dell (which I think it was sold by Dell). Anyways, I don't think the vendor name really matter.

For W5700, it is in PCIE slot of 63:00:0 (1002:7312) and for WX3200 it is in PCIE slot of 41:00.0 (1002:6981).

Re: GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

Looks like I should have been a bit clearer.

PCI passthrough requires motherboard, chipset, pcie controllers, cpu , firmware, kernel level software, user level software and more to work together closely.

Your system appears to be a prebuilt one made by lenovo . To get accurate info about it I need to know the exact model / type used by lenovo .

Also it's rather common for PCI express physical slots to share buses / capabilities with other slots. Sometimes this leads to non-working setups [1]

Can you open the case and get the designations of the physical pci express slots the videocards occupy ?

The script output shows a lot of very small iommu groups but no indication of problems.
I don't see any reference to the passed through videocard in the xml file , are you sure attaching the card in virtmanager was succesfull ?

[1]
example :
card A in slot X , card B in slot Y .
B can be passed through, A can't .
Further testing shows slot Y is usable for pass through, slot X isn't .
The documentation for the motherboard does confirm slot X and Y are connected to different controllers.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

Ahh okay. I shifted the cards around.

The make and the model of the machine are Lenovo Thinkstation P620 (30E0CTO1WW).

GPUs are installed in the following slots: WX3200 (slot 3), W5700 (slot 1). These slot configuration is suggested by Lenovo.

I do not know which PCIE slots can/can't be used for the GPU passthough. Also I do now know which PCIE slots are connected to which controllers in the motherboard. My hardware maintenance manual does not say such thing.. How do I find this out?

Below is the XML script output for the PCI device (GPU) that I am passing.

<hostdev mode="subsystem" type="pci" managed="yes">
  <source>
    <address domain="0x0000" bus="0x43" slot="0x00" function="0x0"/>
  </source>
  <address type="pci" domain="0x0000" bus="0x00" slot="0x02" function="0x0"/>
</hostdev>

I mean, the only thing that I can be sure about "attaching the card in virt-manager being successful" is that the VM starts fine without any error. Is there a way that I can find out whether it is successful? I can see the device in the lspci output.

Re: GPU passthrough via QEMU/KVM

I've found nothing in the docs that could cause this also no diagrams in manual that show how pcie lanes are connnected .
I will have to fall back to more general troubleshooting .

libvirt does lots of things (network, spice, firewall rules etc) and has been the cause of issues with VMs in the past.

Can you create a simple VM & passtrough the videocard with qemu directly ?

Oh man... I would need to take some time to do this as I am quite new to this VM scene. I'll post as soon as possible.
