Hi there

Hi ..

Two weeks ago I've started with archlinux and I just wanted to say that I like ist very much. This is the place where I can finaly rest my bones wink  Back in 94 with I've started with  SusE (at the time a localized Slackware), lost then interrest , went back again, made a switch to BSD (mostly Open and Net BSD) , went back again  to SusE which didn't felt "right" anymore ..so I searched for alternatives(Gentoo,FC,debian) ..  which I've  found  first in Slackware then Zenwalk and now  I've found Arch..  and I think I'm going to stay.

Keep up the good work

Re: Hi there

Welcome to Arch! I'm curious, how was your experiences with Zenwalk? I was thinking of trying it a while back.

Re: Hi there

Hi deficite, first thank you for that warm welcome.
Well Zenwalk is OK .. it's basically  a "current" Slackware with an vanilla 2.6 Kernel by default.
It incorporates  XFCE4 as it's standard Desktop which I personally like a lot.  Install is like Slackware  with one difference, you can't choose any packages. Zenwalk installs automatically one application for each task, but the choice isn't always that good in my personal opinion. If you want more/other packages your stuck with  Netpackage System, linuxpackages.net and the standard Slackware repository. I've often installed software from source because I couldn't get any "up to date" packages. Zenwalk is nice when you are satisfied with the defaults, but if you want more ...
That's why I switched to Arch big_smile

Hi triplefault, welcome to arch! <

If you like xfce, check out Shadowhand's repo, he's a respected member of our community who keeps current packages of xfce-svn. Might keep you satisfied until the next official release. There are a lot of upgrades...

Re: Hi there

I didn't realize that Zenwalk was so closed in. That's why I love Arch. If I want to switch DE's I just download another DE and start using it. I don't have to use a guidebook to switch (like I would using *buntu).

Shadowhand's XFCE packages are very nice. I use them on an everyday basis and I would be lost without them. XFCE has gotten so much better recently (after a period of blah, IMHO. For a while all they were doing was adding bloat).

Hopefully you won't experience many triplefaults while using arch 8)

Hi stavrosg,hotsauce,deficite

Sorry for my late reply, but work and serious Kernel troubles kept me busy for a while.

There are KDE and GNOME packages available for Zenwalk which make a switch from XFCE easier. But you don't have any choice on Install .. as I said before Zenwalk won't ask for any packages, it's install what it think it's best.

I've heard about Shadowhands repository before, and this was another good reason to switch to Arch smile
