Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

Hello.
I installed Arch a few days ago and I'm currently following the General Recommendations article.
Anyway, my issue is that there is a pop/crack sound coming from my speakers quite frequently. Apart from that audio works fine. If i open alsamixer I can actually see that every time there is a pop the audio output changes from Surround to Headphones for a split second and then it changes back.
I've found several topics where people had similar issues and I' tried a few things but nothing worked so far.  I feel kind of lost at this point. Please tell me what additional information should I share about my system so you can help me find the problem. Thank you.

If the symptoms match, hook onto that thread and report this one as duplicate.

Re: Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

Now I use PulseAudio and this problem was also present when i was using only ALSA. I get these pops constantly not just when there is no audio being played.

Re: Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

Did you try https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1999311 ?
Is the a pattern to the artifacts (same sound, steady frequency, …) or is it "noise"?

the audio output changes from Surround to Headphones for a split second and then it changes back.

Which is weird to happen out of the blue and especially w/ alsa only.

Re: Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

Yes i tried it. The frequency is not steady at all. It's unpredictable to me. It's just the same single mild pop every time. It occurs anywhere between like 0.5 sec and 10 sec.

Re: Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PulseA … g_playback but that doesn't cover "alsa only" (where I also don't understand how the audio output would randomly change unless some userspace client does that - in which case: try to reproduce it on a console login, 2nd link below)

Re: Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

Okay I solved it. One of my monitor is connected via HDMI and it seems like it was interfering with my jack output. I looked at the link you attached and I used hdajackretask to set the HDMI to No Connection. Although it solves my problem I'm sure there is a better way to do this. Since we know the cause of the problem can you suggest me a solution? I'll mark this solved.

Re: Audio output switching randomly + cracks/pops

Install the boot override?
You're telling the system to not use one of the outpus - that doesn't explain what or why keeps switching them.
