Hi - I've been having some troubles getting mplayer to work. I've been using gmplayer and there was a time when it did play video files (though the screen was small and wouldn't get any bigger though the black border around the screen could be enlarged). However now when I try to play an av file I get the following -
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device
I found a previous thread in the forums with the same error occurring and followed it, like the previous poster when I run xvinfo I get
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
no adaptors present
But this thread didn't seem to ever resolve the issue... I suspect I have done something horrible to my xorg.conf. My video drivers section looks like this -
# Device configured by xorgconfig:
Section "Device"
Identifier "3"
Driver "vesa"
#VideoRam 16384
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection
Any help would be much appreciated!

If X starts and runs fine then xorg.conf should be configured ok.
If you click on mplayer settings and go to the video tab, what's listed?

The video tab has
xv X11/Xv
x11 X11 (XImage/Shm)
gl X11 (OpenGL)
gl2 X11 (OpenGL) - multiple textures version
xvidix X11 (VIDIX)
xv is selected.
'Enable double buffering' is ticked
Under 'Movie FPS' it says 0.000
That's pretty much it...

with the xf86-video-vesa package, you dont get xv. Try the x11 video driver for gmplayer.
With the xf86-video-ati package, you get xv (with a ati video chip) while you don't with the fglrx driver where you get opengl instead.
have fun

Yes - but now I need to do some fiddling I think so as to be able to enlarge the screen...
