proton games all of a sudden won't work

after uninstalling gnome and installing mate, proton games have suddenly stopped working. i cannot figure out why and the log file seems to tell me nothing.

I wonder if a dependency was removed when you uninstalled GNOME. Is it just non-native games that you play using Proton on Steam that don't work? You might try reinstalling the games from Steam.

Which versions of Proton have you tried? FWIW I have Dirt Rally 2.0, Assetto Corsa (original version, needed protontricks to get running) and Torchlight II all running fine under Proton Experimental in my Arch box.
