[Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

Good folks,

I am using a 4k TV with my PC as my monitor and my videocard is a Radeon R9 280 so I cant get 60hz at 4k. KDE is alright in 1920x1080 and I would like to have the SDDM at the same resolution. Last time I installed Arch I gave up on this, but now I want to have everything perfect and learn as much as I can, so I am sorry for asking. Some replies in others posts said we just need the Section  "Monitor", but I tried a full config since it failed.

Xrandr outuput:

Screen 0: minimum 16 x 16, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
XWAYLAND0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1020mm x 570mm

the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf file I made:

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "HDMI-A-1"
    Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080_60"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Monitor "VGA1"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Modes "1920x1080_60.00"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
     Identifier "AMD"
     Driver "amdgpu"
EndSection

I dont know how to find out which Screen Identifier it is using or Device Identifier or if my monitor/tv is VGA1, looked at several posts here and elsewhere and went with that .

Can you help me find that out? If I made any mistakes on this file and if I need to edit something else?

Thanks for all the replys. (I will be a bit afk because I will get my children at school)

Re: [Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

You're running a wayland session and everything you're doing X11-wise is moot.

That being said, your "Screen" section references Monitor "VGA1" but apparently the desired output is HDMI-A-1
Though to acutally know the correct label, we'd need the xrandr output from an actual X11 session

Re: [Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

Thanks Seth

I completely understand that, but as far as I undertood SDDM is still running under Xorg even though it will send me to a Kwin wayland sesssion. I think I saw that we are close for a SDDM 100% Wayland release soon.

So it may be a worthless effort as you point out. big_smile

But I would like to "fix it" before going crazy in KDE theming. Chaging the VGA1 to HDMI-A-1 still gave me a 4k rendering.

Re: [Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

Log into an X11 session and dump "xrandr" there so we actually know the output labels.
Also see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SDDM#Rotate_display and the following paragraphs (obviously, xrandr can do more than rotating the display…)

Re: [Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

I am such a noob, rofl...

I installed the SDDM (and didnt install Xorg), but it seems I got enough of it to be able to launch KDE in X11. So funny.

Re: [Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

You don't need the extra modeline, the edid provides the mode you're using anyway.

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "HDMI-A-0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
EndSection

should™ be enough.
If it's not, simply set the mode in SDDMs server setup script w/ xrandr.

Re: [Solved] SDDM / XORG Resolution

Thanks a lot Seth, that last one did the trick. (I cleaned the file and just left what you suggested)

I wonder why the last one didnt work though, since in my noobish ways it looks quite the same haha.
