Smart card reader not detected

I have this Dell Latitude E6410, which came with a smart card reader and I'd quite like it to work because it's there and it's interesting.
So, the reader has a "BCM5880 Secure Applications Processor with fingerprint swipe sensor". Now, I know the FP reader is never going to work, but the card reader part is supposed to be supported.
So I've installed (on the basis of one thing doesn't work, try another) ccid, acsccid, pcsclite, pcsc-tools, libacard and opensc. The reader is not detected by opensc-tool or pcsc-scan.
So where do I go from here? Is the reader junk or am I just missing a configuration?
