Howdy! First time poster trying to be thorough. After running my usual upgrades "pacman -Syu", my Xorg session failed to start via startx. I have narrowed the issue down to a segfault when rotating my monitor orientation.
My Setup:
- 2 Monitors, one portrait
- Graphics card: AMD Radeon R9 270x using the usual open source radeon drivers
- Running i3 on top of Xorg
- Xrandr runs when starting i3 via the following command included in my i3 config:
xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --off --output DVI-1 --off --output DVI-0 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1080x550 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate left
The issue:
- Everything was working fine and then I upgraded my system via "pacman -Syu". This included updates to xorg-session and various other xorg packages. Here are the relevant upgrades in my pacman logs (/var/log/pacman.log):

What I've Tried:
- I have removed the xrandr command from my i3 config and can start X without error
- From within the started X session, I can execute an Xrandr command without error so long as it does not include the "rotate" option. Whenever I execute xrandr with this option, my session crashes as above
- I downgraded my Xorg packages and managed to recover working and correct behavior. Here is the output of grep -i downgraded /var/log/pacman.log

- I have tried to achieve monitor rotation through the rotate option in "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf" and arrive at the same crashing behavior above. This leads me to believe it is Xorg and not xrandr as the culprit
- I have run glxgears without any crashing
- I am currently running on wayland without issue (but I would love to get back to Xorg)
Does anyone have insight here on further things I might try or more details I can provide?

You are not alone!
Breaks on my Radeon R9 270x too. Seems to be AMD Radeon only as I also tried it on my old laptop with Nvidia 9300m with the Noveau driver without problem, but on an old AMD APU PC would reliably crash.
I downgraded these packages without trouble:
cd /var/cache/packman/pkg/
pacman -U xorg-server-1.20.13-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-common-1.20.13-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-xvfb-1.20.13-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-xwayland-21.1.2.901-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-input-evdev-2.10.6-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-input-wacom-0.40.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-input-libinput-1.2.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-video-amdgpu-21.0.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-video-ati-1:19.1.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
(Side topic but have you had any success with running the AMDGPU driver on this card? Mullti-monitor is unstable with dead outputs if more than one display is attached at boot.)

Same here with a Sapphire HD 7750 card, i3 and two monitors (one portrait).
This fixed it for now (same general idea as quantumphaze but without a few packages I didn't have installed, and with some xf86-video ones that were conflicting):
cd /var/cache/packman/pkg/
pacman -U xorg-server-1.20.13-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xorg-server-common-1.20.13-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-input-libinput-1.2.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-video-amdgpu-21.0.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-video-ati-1:19.1.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-video-fbdev-0.5.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst xf86-video-vesa-2.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Can you reprodruce this when you remove xf86-video-amdgpu and just rely on the modesetting driver instead? (... in general these package downgrade lists make me nervous. You can remove all xf86-video-* packages other than the one specific to your card (... well to test that in this case, remove that as well))
Offline
V1del, I was indeed able to reproduce the issue with xf86-video-amdgpu removed and only xf86-video-ati installed. Removed the extra packages, thanks!
quantumphaze, I have had no issues at all with the driver until now. My multi-monitor setup has worked without any error!
Offline
and only xf86-video-ati
The plan actually was to use the modesetting driver, so remove that one, too.
The backtrace clearly ends in that driver, so it is what is ultimately crashing your server (possibly -hopefully temporary- incompatibility w/ the recent X11 server ABI bump)
Online
I have switched over to the AMDGPU driver and dealt with the unrelated blank output issue (I have to connect one screen at a time else at least one screen is dead).
Rotating the monitor does not crash with xf86-video-amdgpu, this bug only affects xf86-video-ati (so far).

Sorry for the delay here! It appears the latest update to xf86-video-ati fixed this on my machine, I suspect it was in this commit https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-p … 5eb9b7203a. Thanks everyone
