[solved] intel-media-driver stopped working

So I wondered why my fans of my c940 started to turn up while watching videos (mpv and firefox) and I got some errors. I didn't change any config recently. It was working before but now I can't run for example intel_gpu_top.

This is my xorg config:

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Option      "Driver"      "modesetting"
   Option      "AccelMethod" "glamor"
   Option      "TearFree"    "true"
   Option      "NoAccel"     "false"
   Option      "DRI"         "3"
   Option      "Backlight"   "intel_backlight"
EndSection

The GPU:

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Iris Plus Graphics G7 (rev 07)

vainfo first returned "unknown libva error" described in the wiki, so I set up the LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME variable. Now vainfo returns:

$ vainfo
libva error: /usr/lib/dri/iHD_drv_video.so init failed
vaInitialize failed with error code 1 (operation failed),exit

And this is an error I get from mpv when trying to play a youtube video

 (+) Video --vid=1 (*) (vp9 1920x1080 60.000fps)
 (+) Audio --aid=1 --alang=eng (*) (opus 2ch 48000Hz)
File tags:
 Uploader: uploader
 Channel_URL: channelurl
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate
[vo/gpu/opengl] Suspected software renderer or indirect context.
[vo/gpu] VT_GETMODE failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
[vo/gpu/opengl] Failed to set up VT switcher. Terminal switching will be unavailable.
error: Kernel is too old for Iris. Consider upgrading to kernel v4.16.

Re: [solved] intel-media-driver stopped working

Multiple things in that xorg config make no sense ("TearFree" nor "Backlight" exist on modesetting) , but they won't be the reason for the issue.

If you've manually enabled GuC via the kernel parameter there appears to be a regression in the kernel: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=271276

Re: [solved] intel-media-driver stopped working

Thanks for the hints. These values are leftovers from when I used the xf86-video-intel package. I will remove them.

I disabled GuC and VAAPI is working again.
