Re: Intel 945GM graphics

Sure i can...

http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/showthread.php?t=22220

i dont find anything for ubuntu right now, but asi remember it was the same issue with the repository and xorg like it is mentioned in the above link.
In that link there is the same error message that i get when starting X with i810 drivers. But because im still somewhat of a Linux Noob i cant figure out what the problem is really about.

For saftey i post my error messages here again:

- module ABI major version(0) doesn´t match the server´s version(1)
- Failed to load module "i810" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
- No drivers available

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

Ok, problem is clear now :

The i810 drvier in current was build for Xorg 7 , and we have switched to Xorg 7.1 .
The package is flagged out of date, but hasn't been updated yet.

Looks like you have the following options :

- wait until the driver has been updated by the maintainer, JGC. asking him nicely in mail/pm might speed this up.

- build the latest version of the driver yourself like Shen has done. Maybe shen can send you the packages he made so you don't have to build those yourself.

- use the temporary workaround that is mentioned in the unixboard post and works for clownish who posted it.
a. boot to a console login and login as user.
(if you use a graphical login like kdm/gdm you will have to disable it for the time being)
b. type

startx -- -ignoreABI

this tells X to ignore the difference in version numbers and continue starting the graphic environment.

Booting with apg Openrc, NOT systemd.
Automounting : not needed, i prefer pmount
Aur helpers : makepkg + my own local repo === rarely need them

Hmm, no. The package in current (xf86-video-i810 1.6.5-2) is for Xorg 7.1. I'm using it right now and it works fine.

Maybe there is a mismatch between the installed driver and the xorg-server. This is what I have:

$ pacman -Qs xorg-server xf86-video-i810
local/xorg-server 1.1.1-3
    X.Org X servers
local/xf86-video-i810 1.6.5-2
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915 video drivers

You can refresh the packages with 'pacman -Sy xorg-server xf86-video-i810'.

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

I am pretty sure i have the same version, but i will post them here too as soon as i have time for it. I installed drivers+server just a few days ago, so they should be the same.

I will try to reinstall both, because i remember that i tried to install the drivers from the intel page before i tried those from the repository. Maybe that messed something up....

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

Ok, after i did  remove everything of  xorg and intel drivers and did a clean re-install it works now. But i still have some problems.

1.) I cant get my widescreen Resolution to work. I edited xorg.conf and put in 1280x800 like i did on my other system, but in KDE i have no option of selecting it.

2.) The looks of  everything is not very good. Everything is a bit blurry, fonts are sometimes hard to read...looks too "smoothy" if you understand what  I mean(sry, im german and dont know how to express everything^^)

3.) I dont know if my hardware acceleration works. I dont have the command "glxgears" like i have on my other system. Maybe its because on the other system i have an ati graphics card, i dont know. How can i get some kind of benchmark or test if it works corretly?

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

In order to get glxgears I had to install mesa I think it was. Yeah it's the package called mesa which use to be called mesa-apps. Install that and you will have the needed opengl library.

For the resolution error there is an app in the aur called 915resolution. I installed that and added a line to my rc.local to force it to change the resolution for one of the modes in xorg. There are docs for this app that explains everything in pretty good detail. Here's a link... http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/

For the font bluring issue that could be the refresh settings in the corg.conf. I forget what I set mine to but I'll look abit later. Mine is 14.1" widescreen laptop so not sure if it will work for you or not.

Hope that helps. If glxgears does not start working do a search on the forum for glxgears and you will find some info. That's what I did to figure out what packages to install to get it working. It's not a native dependancy of the drivers or xorg packages. Hope that all helps.

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

Ok, I got the i810 driver working for the most part. I can start KDE & FVWM but I'm having some odd problems with Fluxbox.

If I put "exec fluxbox" in xinitrc then X starts fine, but if I use "exec startfluxbox" (which is what I really need) then I get the "(WW) I810: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found " thing again.

Also, when using the vesa driver I get "(WW) VESA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xb0000000,0x7b0000)"

I'm using the latest xorg, i810 & fluxbox packages from Arch. This sure is annoying. Any ideas?

Ok, shen, maybe i could use your help again wink

i did read the link you postet and installed the pakage 915resolution from AUR, but i cant figure out what i have to add in the rc.conf(you said rc.local, but i think you meant rc.conf, right?^^) and if i do "915resolution -l" i havent got the 1280x800 resolution listed in the output.

Edit:
And i cant find this mesa-apps pakage. when i search for glxgears every thread says that it is in the mesa-apps pakage, but i just cant find it.

Here's what I did for the 915resolution...

In rc.local I added this line..yes rc.local since it is the last rc script to load after boot...

/usr/sbin/915resolution 38 1280 800 24

Now the mesa-apps was replaced by a package named mesa. So just pacman -Sy mesa and you should be golden and glx and should load fine.

Mine does that and so far anyone I have talked to has the same issue. Just ignore it it will still work just fine as far as I can tell.

Also when you add exec fluxbox to .xinitrc as far as I know and I could be wrong that will execute startfluxbox. If I just type startfluxbox it doesn't even launch flux just spits out some info and never starts. I have to use the .xinitrc method and then startx for anything other then if I use something like GDM.

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

Using "exec startfluxbox" is suppose to start fluxbox just like "exec fluxbox" would, except it also loads a certain startup file which has settings for the programs you want to run at startup, keymaps, background settings, etc.. Using "exec fluxbox" hasn't been loading the file so I assumed that was probably the problem.

I've been using "startx" to start it up. It goes as follows:

login
startx
x pops up for half a second then dumps me back to the console with (WW) I810: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found.

This might be a dumb question, but how do I ignore it? Is there a command?

Thanks.

Hmm has to be more then that going on as that is just a warning. How the i810 driver works is it looks for your vid card on two different Bus ID'. There is a way to disable that if I remember correctly.

Try this.. press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and that should take you to the tty that will show the info that comes up when you type startx. Maybe there is something there that is being missed. I'll look through the xorg file you posted as well and compare it to mine and heck I may jsut post mine for reference if it is different. Also what model laptop is this? Could be a refresh issue. I'll post more in just a sec.

One more thing do you have the package ttf-bistream-vera installed? If not install it. I had to install it for Flux to load.

Ok, after searching for more Fluxbox specific problems I found out that my problem was with not adding "exec fluxbox" to my Fluxbox startup file. It was so simple yet completely overlooked!

I appreciate your effort trying to help, thanks big_smile. Sorry about leading the thread a bit off topic.

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

Hi,

I succesfully used 915resolution, but I dont get 1280x800.

/var/log/Xorg.log says:

(WW) I810(0): config file hsync range 28-96kHz not within DDC hsync ranges.
(WW) I810(0): config file vrefresh range 50-75Hz not within DDC vrefresh ranges.

(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1280x800" (no mode of this name)

(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "1024x768"
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "800x600"
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "640x480"

(WW) I810(0): Probed monitor is 300x190 mm, using Displaysize 300x210 mm

So it cant find 1280x800

Re: Intel 945GM graphics

In the SubSection "Display" you list the modes you'd like to use on you display. But this list should include modes defined in the Modelines in the Section "Monitor". On the contrary, in your Section Monitor there is no mode called "1280x800"; rename "1280x800_60.00" to "1280x800".
