high ram usage after a latest update?

I recently noticed that I got little ram left because I disabled the swap because I have 16GB RAM and have nvme, and no RAM left hangs my laptop.
I see some of it was from firefox RAM usage, some from steam game I was playing but closing all apps still show that I have using almost 5GB of RAM.
a restart lowers it to under 1GB usage.

I checked the /tmp and that is not used so now I am stumped. htop just shows 4GB RAM usage but the apps it shows dont use near 4GB together. (Which is different by 1GB from kde system monitor but that is not the main issue here) but

how can I find what is using RAM ?
I noticed this after latest xorg update to 21 but I could be wrong.

because when I try to use game and firefox it doesnt release the 4-5gb and I am left with the just 10 gb (1gb somehow is used for video card ram on apu)

Why do you think this isn't the cache? Which tool are you looking at and which numbers are you interpreting (post a htop screenshot in doubt)? What's your output of

free -m
cat /proc/meminfo

"Playing a steam game" will almost certainly fill up your cache especially if background downloads/shader compilations happened. FWIW if you're using KDE kinfocenter gives you a easily visible graph to check cache vs application usage.

I meant when I close the games and dota then still ram says 4GB used.


and when I later open dota game and firefox  with many tabs,  again my memory usage goes to near full almost and when I check with system monitor then I see that from the 15GB ram (1gb used for onboard vga) firefox and steam are using the rest but the 4gb is not freed. so that 4gb is still there what ever I do.
and 4gb is the not the biggest. I use my laptop with no logout for many days and I even have seen 6-7GB used with all apps closed and only desktop session running.

the similar situation that I got in the past  what when dolphin file manager would use /tmp for temp files of videos (which I could no diagnose does make it not do that) but now that I check /tmp is empty with 7GB space.
so maybe it is xorg maybe it is plasma desktop but something causes my session kinda lose RAM.
I will relogin and try to remember not to open steam to see if it is steam maybe.

it seems that relogin doesnt actually help so I am not sure it is plasma fault.
before relogin ram used shown in system monitor was 3.7GB and relogin it is still 3.7

now I will remove X and try to test wayland.

update:
tested with wayland and didnt see any difference.
will go back to X and see if I dont open DOTA game does the RAM issue still occurs.

That's 5 gig in the cache. The point of the cache is to not free itself if there's no direct need to, so you can reopen dota quicker should you decide you closed it prematurely. It will get freed if things show up that actually need the RAM space. Relogin doesn't help because you are if anything reusing that cache to start plasma quicker. if you want to simulate this you can do a

echo 3 | sudo tee -a /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

to drop the cache and watch your "missing" RAM come back. But this isn't something you need to do or worry about during normal operation.

if this is truly the case then why I didnt see this before? 1GB is the startup RAM for session and I can understand 1GB more for other stuff that accumulate so from this 5, 3 is cache?
and dota uses its own cache of top of this 5GB as far as I saw.
as in firefox would use 8 and this 'cache' or something causing this would use 5 and dota would use more than 3GB .and this would cause my system to hang.

so two points:
1- if this cache that would be freed if needed why my system doesnt free it so that it doesnt hang?

2-if this is dota cache why when I use dota again dota uses more RAM on top of it.
dota uses 3-4GB first time.

btw system monitor in kde is a not a healthy app.
sometimes it doesnt even show firefox in process name.
so I use htop to be sure.

1gb somehow is used for video card ram on apu

is it? iirc it defaults to 2GB (and I'm not even sure whether it can dynamically claim more)
Let's see your dmesg and check your BIOS/UEFI on whether you can restrict there APU VRAM there and whether that has impact on the RAM situation.

btw system monitor in kde is a not a healthy app.

None of the aggregators are.

sorry, forgot about that.
In bios(uefi) I can set vram to 512MB,1GB,2GB) but when I set to 512MB I get 15GB ram left instead of 15.5.
also I have read that that amount is not actually used and gets expanded dynamicly (though I am not sure if that is true or how that works)
and if I set it to 2GB I have 13.5GB left so I just set it to 512MB.

I think I have narrowed down the issue to VRAM. but not the bios setting. the actual VRAM used. I think when an app (mostly games) uses VRAM more than the allocated (max 2GB) , it uses from rest of 13.5GB RAM (16GBRAM -2GB VRAM -0.5GB at the start the is not available) and after closing the game it doesn't release it back to the system.


the first pointer was that I see that the used RAM was usually after plaything DOTA2 game.

so I have a gpu benchmark from past days installed that has a cool feature that before bench-marking, it estimates how much vram it needs.
it is called "superposition benchmark".

I set its setting to 1080 medium and at the bottom it says that it is going to use 1299 MB / 2048 MB. so I run that. before that RAM usage is 1.1GB and after finishing that in full screen the RAM usage is still around the same.

then I set its setting to 8k optimized and at the bottom it says that it is going to use 6241MB/2048MB. so I run that
and after finishing that and closing the app , RAM usage is 6.8GB.

so it seems when VRAM usage goes over 2GB (which is the max I can set in bios) the VRAM doesnt get released back to the system.
I will test later with 512MB vram in bios, to see if for that the issue start at 2GB or 512MB, because the second case if worse, because for example, in the benchmark mentioned the ram stealing would start at over 512MB usage and not 2GB.

update:
yep, with 512MB I tested the benchmark with 1080 medium which it says it needs 1299/512MB.
before usage 1GB and after usage 2.8GB and after closing the app 2.2GB (thou all these are shown by system monitor which is not the most accurate app)



where can I report this issue now that I can reproduce it?

I saw something for that gtt in radeontop app.

if by abuse you mean use firefox and open so many tabs that makes the devil  blush then I think as I said in my posts before (I have disabled swap) if I remember correctly the system hangs (it did many times on  my 12gb last laptop) but I am not completely sure I have tested it with this laptop cause that would make my firefox profile corrupt.

when I have a bit more time (when not using the laptop) I will test that method in stackexchange .

btw whta is GTT? is is the allowed memory that can borrow over the max 2gb set in bios?
so if I set bios to 2gb that stay as 3 or goes down to 2 for a max of 4 or stay 3 for a max of 5?

You'll have to try or check older system journals (as mentioned, those limits will likely be reported via dmesg - so you don't have to actually run some VRAM consuming benchmark)

so what is GTT ? should I know what it is as a user?

also after writing that post about firefox as luck would have it, I seems to have done it and used all the ram by having open firefox for too long with two video playing and playing dota too.
system grinds to a halt and I have no choice but to force restart it with power button. not even tty switching works.



also when I game (or dota is open with no actual  gaming just server finding) , sometimes (usually when ram nears full), video playing in firefox seems to drop frames (in invidious, a youtube proxy site).

I have a suspicion that the ram usages accumulates,and it happens  for all apps and not just games and it doesn't get released back or reused when the app that caused that ram to be unavailable relaunches.

because when the system hanged as I said at the top of this reply, firefox had about 4GB usage and I had a 14.5 total RAM available (with 1gb set for vram it remains 15.5 -1gb) and steam client had 3GB (in system monitor so it added dota to it I think) but because dota had a update before that , it seems that ram usage that was near 12GB with 2.5GB free remaining was not enough for dota to run a game again.

so it seems that dota cant even use the ram it wasted last time it ran. so I think it adds up. which is very bad because I would have to restart my system many time to clear that.

though I think games (or gpu benchmarks) have the most effect so if I dont game I may not have to reboot every day.
