So I tried out Flightgear, and found that, as soon as I got the virtual plane moving, the framerate would drop to about 1 FPS no matter what I did - I could mess around with my xorg.conf options, change my xinitrc to run it alone, turn off all resource-intensive effects (almost all of which are already turned off by default), etc., still no-go.
According to the website, my hardware is more than adequate to run the thing, so I would expect that the problem lies in Flightgear using software rendering even when hardware rendering is available, ala TuxRacer... but according to the console output ("driCreateScreen_blahblahblah successful..." etc.) hardware rendering is being used, at least as far as I can ascertain. Does anyone here know what has Flightgear hung up?

I'm having the same troubles. Sometimes, the game state also appears to be progressing way to rapidly, and I go from standstill to flying into the ground in less than a second.
