I (try to) use esd under xfce4, but it persistantly crashes in between song changes/after the first audio stream stops. Any ideas?

try to run xmms or the tool you run to play sounds from a console and maybe there is some output telling more about the crashes
and you can also try to have a look at the logs:
[damir@Asteraceae /]$ more /var/log/errors | grep esd
or with
/var/log/messages

nothing says anything. To test esd, I'll start it up in a terminal window, then I'll either play a song in xmms or make a sound in gaim. At some point while switching songs (it doesn't happen at every song change, at the least every 4 songs) esd quits (a new line pops up), while xmms gives me the "Couldn't open audio" error message. Likewise in gaim, esd will stop, and gaim's sound will be cut off early.
I checked the logs you pointed to. No output.

hmm ... i think i suspect what the problem can be, but as i dont use esd, i cannot say how to fix it
if esd switches songs, it suspends itself and gives your audio-device free to other programms to use ... there must be a program running on your machine that waits till esd suspends and then takes the sound-device for itself ... and when esd tries then to un-suspend and play the next song, it closes itself (no crash) because it cannot open the audio device
try to find out what else runs on your machine when this happens that can use sound, but not over esd ... and try not using it or there must be a option to tell esd to suspend not that fast (timeout? dont know for esd, but artsd has a timeout you can set)
are you using arts, jack, ??? any thing that can use the sounddevice directly?

no, nothing....just xmms, gaim, sometimes firefox, even less often mplayer.

Yeah i have the same problem here, tho i am using KDE
sounds works fine, but if i am using xmms and a terminal or gaim trys to make a sound (it doesnt) then when the song changes xmms says "no audio device, maybe something else is using it"
at one point gaim had even saved up all its sounds so when i closed xmms i had about 20 seconds of Gaim sounds - online, offline, new msg, message sent, and over and over, was actually kinda funny.
I am using the lastests Alsa drivers..
Any thoughts?
