Need help with applications selecting wrong color profiles

I have a new monitor and some applications like Chromium and Discord seem to select the wrong color profile. The applications start, but all look like they are behind a grey curtain. I am not sure what these apps have in common, maybe they are all examples of those electron apps, but I am not sure.

I know it is the color profiles since I manually changes the chrome://flags/#force-color-profile in Chromium to sRGB and now it works fine.

My question is how can I set this globally for all of those apps, because Chromium is the only one that has a setting for this!

All three are gtk3 programs. Do you use other gtk programs, or is this otherwise a qt/kde system? How have you tried setting the color profile so far? Have you followed this page?

I am using i3 with other Gnome apps. Like Firefox and Evolution, those are fine. I am not entirely sure which are gtk3 programs.

I have not yet tried to set a color profile.

I read the article but don't seem to grasp it well. I do not see how it applies to my problem. It seems to be about creating custom color profiles after calibrating the device. My screen was calibrated in the factory and I don't have means to calibrate it myself. Also the colors are fine on other apps and only those I listed have problems. Maybe you can give me a hint what I am not understanding here!

I tried one thing, though. I installed colord, gnome-color-manager and xcalib. gnome-color-manager show that there is supposed to be an sRGB profile in /usr/share/color/icc/colord/sRGB.icc, but when I try to run

[sapiens]$ cat .xinitrc
[...]

# load sRGB ICC profile
/usr/bin/xcalib -d :0 /usr/share/color/icc/colord/sRGB.icc

exec i3

it fails with

Warning - No calibration data in ICC profile '/usr/share/color/icc/colord/sRGB.icc' found

Ok second attempt did something. I set my monitor profile to sRGB this time and followed the section about xiccd this time, and the colors of the previously mentioned apps look like the other apps now.

On the other hand the colors of the whole display look different than before. Much less vivid. Is this intended or do I need to set a different profile? I have never needed to use a color profile before!

I've never used any of that either, so I can't give specific feedback. But in your first post manually setting a color profile in chromium reportedly fixed the problem, so it sounded like you just needed to do that system-wide which is what the linked wiki page is all about.

I gather you do want to set a system-wide color profile, but just a different one from what you just set. Perhaps someone else can chime in with better input on how to adjust these profiles.

I am also not sure. I have the strong feeling the overall colors are less vivid than before. However as far as I know sRGB is an established standard and I set the monitor to sRGB and the OS to sRGB. I can also not see anything in particular wrong with the colors. Maybe this is actually how they are supposed to look.

I'd say they're "supposed to look" however you like them. By all means figure out how to adjust the profile until it looks how you like it.
