powered off laptop (x1 carbon gen 7), it turned back on, kernel panic?

Title says it all.
$ poweroff
I close lid, put laptop away. A few minutes later I see the thinkpad light is on, as if the laptop never was turned off. I open it, see a kernel panic type wall of text.
The penultimate message is:

[42928.192253] Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!

I promptly held the power button down to force power off.

When I logged back in, there was one thing to note. The battery icon was acting as if it was still charging, plugged in. It was not plugged in.

Beginning of trace:

[42920.176236] RIP: 0010:tb_switch_debugfs_remove+0x5/0x20 [thunderbolt]

The last module loaded was:

ccn

The error type:

[42928.133637] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000a08

Call Trace:

Any clue what this could be? Happy to provide additional info, thanks.
