can i limit memory usage of makepkg ?

When compiling the ungoogled chromium package the oom process kicks in and my system becomes rather irresponsive after a while. Is there a way to limit the memory usage of that process?

Not really. Unless you do single threaded compilation and want to wait ages. The "best" thing to do here is get yourself some swap and let it run over a period of time where you aren't actively using the computer. Or in the case like this use prebuilt packages.
