No HDMI sound after GPU swap

I have two computers running Arch + Gnome. I recently swapped the GPUs, an AMD Radeon RX 580 and an Nvidia 2080 Super, between the machines. Before the swap, both the graphics and sound were working perfectly. After the swap, the HDMI sound on one of the computers has stopped working (graphics fine on both, on-board sound outputs works fine on both).

The machine that has stopped working is the one that now has the AMD card (used to have the Nvidia card).

The HDMI output is recognised by ALSA as device `plughw:0,3`:

aplay -l

and is listed as a sink by pulseaudio:

but no sound comes from the HDMI output... I've googled a *lot* and tried every solution I found, but nothing has worked so far... any tips greatly appreciated!
