[SOLVED]System suddenly slow after update

Hi Everyone,

After a system update, I noticed the my computer was running quite a bit slower(applications taking longer to open, compiling taking forever, etc). Frankly its been driving me insane watching vim take forever to load smile.

After I updated my system this time, I did notice a few abnormalities:
1. Python 3.10 broke optimus-manager and autojump (however that was fixed by recompiling)
2. kitty(my term emulator) broke, but I can't really remember the specific reason(I solved this problem by simply removing and redownloading the package)
3. Many things were updated, included linux and nvidia(I'm using the proprietary drivers)

After I first noticed this issue, I tried downgrading my system but it did not seem to solve the problem. After reading some other posts, I also determined that my cpu did not seem to be limited to some artificially low frequency.
My cpu and memory usage seem to be normal.

I think I can solve the problem by myself, but right now I'm stuck without any direction. Can anyone point me to a possible cause?

So it's not the update…

If it's not CPU or RAM, "applications taking longer to open, compiling taking forever" sounds like the disk.
First step is to figure *what* is actually slow: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Benchmarking

Re: [SOLVED]System suddenly slow after update

Thanks for the post Rendevon. Whenever Arch has an update as big as the one today I always poke around a bit first to see what problems people are having, or if there are any preliminary instructions.

Using UnixBench I did a before and after comparison.

Before the update I had an index score of 3520.1

After the update I have an index score of 3225.3

I do not have any baseline, this is the 1st and 2nd time this system has been bench-marked.  Obviously the index score itself, by definition would seem to indicate my system is performing quite well. Also, the higher the score the better, so after the update there was marginal loss..

Re: [SOLVED]System suddenly slow after update

Well, it seems like the problem solved itself smile.

After wrestling with the system for another hour, I decided to call it quits and go to sleep.

Today, I opened my computer and discovered that everything was quick and responsive as before. Maybe my computer just needed a good night's sleep? I had tried rebooting multiple times yesterday to no avail but I'll take it smile.

Possibly sideload (eg. file tracker?)?
