Pulseaudio issues

Hi,

I've previously had a working audio setup, but now am just getting quiet noise through my outputs.
In pavucontrol I can see that apps are successfully outputting to the output devices.
I can see the level bar moving for both headphone and Line out outputs when I select between them.

Muting the headphone output mutes the quiet background noise and reenabling it restarts the background noise. The level control has no effect on the noise.

Thanks!

Re: Pulseaudio issues

Rule out a HW issue, do you have headphones/different speakers to test? Did you double check and ensure they are properly plugged in? Does

speaker-test -Dhw:1 -c2

work? If it doesn't the problem is lower level, either the alsamixer -c1 mixers are off or weird, or you have a kernel or alsa-lib regression.

Re: Pulseaudio issues

Thanks for your help

speaker-test 1.2.6

Playback device is hw:1
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 524288
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 10.931360
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 10.936031
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 10.941600
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right

etc etc until ^c

alsamixer -c1 did show some muted channels including master and headphone but unmuting these hasn't done anything.

You mention kernel or alsa-lib... any further digging I could do into this?

Thanks!

Re: Pulseaudio issues

Did you hear noise from that speaker-test or was it silent? If it was silent then pulse is irrelevant and you either have a HW issue or something lower level.

if speaker-test did not give you output you can try the LTS kernel or so or downgrading alsa-lib,alsa-ucm-conf,alsa-plugins to 1.2.5 or find out under which kernel it last worked. And again because it happens often enough, if your speakers/headphone has some external volume knob make sure that isn't muted.

Re: Pulseaudio issues

Thanks I'll try some downgrades.

Speaker-test silent, so suggests low level issue then.  Headphones fine, 2 pairs both working.
