First, why are you using -Syy ?
What Is your graphics card ?
What desktop environment are you using?
Did you try changing to a different console using Ctrl-Alt-F3 (or any F1 throgh F6)

The reason I ask about Syy is that it is abusive of the resources that are provided free of charge. Please don't waste bandwidth for zero reason.

Do all virual consoles have that same behavior?
