Switching audio devices on Awesomewm

Such an embarrassing question but...

By default I get sound through my headphones and sometimes I want to switch to external speakers connected via optical audio port but after moving to awesomewm, Im not exactly sure what the best option is.

I guess I could try to install applications like indicator-sound-switcher from AUR, but I thought it would be best to ask some of you guys first.  So, what do you use?
