Browser freezing up entire system

Hi

I recently installed Arch(xfce) on my dell 1420 circa 2007 model.  Parts of the output of lshw are appended at the end of this post.

Install went thru fine and the system works fine except for the browser.  I deliberately use the word "browser" becasue the behaviour is exactly the same whether it is firefox or midori or a couple of other browsers I have tried.  When browsing any site the page loads upto about 90% (I am estimating this based on the progress of the bluebar on the browser) and then freezes there.  At this point neither the keyboard nor the mouse works anymore.  Even the REISUB is of no use.  I have to unplug the power to the laptop to shut it down.  Thanks in advance for guidance on troubleshooting.  I am not a newbie but my commandline skills are very basic.  So detailed instructions would be much appreciated.

Re: Browser freezing up entire system

Welcome to the forums.  Please edit your post and add [ code ] tags around the lshw output (see the BBCode link under the post text box to learn more).

On the issue, does it matter what website you try to visit?  Can you `curl` the website content to a local file?  If so, can the browser render that local file?

What video drivers are you using?  Can you post the content of an Xorg log (in code tags) after you restart from one of these freezes?

Have you installed and configured your bootloader to load the intel-ucode?
