xorg configuration weird issue

hi,
I just reinstalled archlinux 7.2 on my laptop, using the same selection of packages as the previous install (same archlinux 7.2).
the only difference is that where before using hwd -xa configured X no problems, now it cannot recognize my touchpad mouse.
I tried to manually edit the xorg.conf file but it doesnt seems to work.
any clue of what might be the issue?

thanks

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

this is the mouse section of the xorg.conf file generated by mkxcfg
I tried hwd -xa also but to no avail.
as a matter of fact, i just installed arch 7.2 on another laptop where the previous arch install 7.1 worked fine and got the same modprobe output.

psmouse is a module for kernel26 2.6.18. If you use another kernel, it's probably compiled in.

You didn't post your touchpad section of your xorg.conf. Maybe it's missing. Mine looks like this:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
        Driver "synaptics"
        Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
        Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
        Option "Emulate3Timeout" "70"
        Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
        Option "LeftEdge" "1700"
        Option "RightEdge" "5400"
        Option "TopEdge" "1700"
        Option "BottomEdge" "4200"
        Option "FingerLow" "25"
        Option "FingerHigh" "30"
        Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
        Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
        Option "VertScrollDelta" "50"
        Option "MinSpeed" "0.06"
        Option "MaxSpeed" "0.12"
        Option "AccelFactor" "0.0010"
        Option "SHMConfig" "on"
EndSection

You might need to install the synaptics package for some of these options to work.

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

well I installed the standard archlinux kernel which comes with the base Cd and then make the customary upgrade. the kernel is 2.6.16-ARCH.

as for the touchpad section, I wanst able to find one, here's the complete xorg.conf fiel

besides, when I tried mkxcfg in the test way it complains about not finding a mouse.

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

My PS/2 mouse device is /dev/input/mice rather than /dev/psaux. When I plug in a USB mouse they both work together.

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

i just upgraded the system again, went thru the mkinitcpio configuration, created a new image and added autodetect just in case.

however, when I startx  it still desnt work.
weird enoug, if I try mkxcfg -d to get an output I get:

video: No X
mouse: generic PS/2wheel xtype:ps2 device:/dev/psaux

does the No X output means x is not installed properly?
cos i installed xorg, it shows when I try pacman -Q xorg and trying locate X11 shows all the files.

I just cant undestrand whats wrong.

thanks

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

Does startx give any error messages ?
Please post the output of /var/log/Xorg0.log

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

I'm a bit confused by all that, since it does not make sense for me..

But I'd try to update the kernel to latest stock (2.6.18-ARCH) and I'd also check X's synaptics drivers (pacman -S synaptics). Then you could borrow Snowman's xorg.conf's touchpad section and see if something changes.

EDIT:
Just occured to me: did you try

#Xorg -configure

?

This command will make ~/xorg.conf.new file with settings autodetected by Xorg. Worked quite well for me..
/EDIT.

-Miky.

P.S. (just curious) Which brand and type is your laptop?

What happened to Arch's KISS? systemd sure is stupid but I must have missed the simple part ...

... and who is general Failure and why is he reading my harddisk?

Re: xorg configuration weird issue

well, I went thru the whole process once again from scratch and now it works fine.
the only thing is that when I startd kdm and also at shutdown, the screen goes white for a couple seconds.
I put kdm as a daemon, I dunno if starting it in the inittab file would make any difference.
by the way, archlinux 7.2 rocks.

thanks
