[SOLVED] 2k monitors and display settings

I ended up returning the monitor, thinking it was the manufacturer. however, I purchased a 2k MSI monitor, same model, just 2k version of the 1080p monitor I have, and wouldn't you know it, it does not stay asleep either.

so, I am starting to believe it's a monitor issue over 1080p resolution, or an XFCE limitation?? and not a hardware issue (previous monitor).

I connected the monitor, I ran the following:

sudo nvidia-config
sudo nvidia-settings

once in nvidia-settings, I set the resolution and refresh rate the way I wanted and then saved to xconfiguration file.

my power savings for display are set to:

blank after 5 minutes
put to sleep after 10 minutes
switch off after 30 minutes.

I noticed under display settings some resolutions have an * and some do not. what does the asterisk mean?

has anyone else run into this?

TLDR; it started working as expected the next day. go figure.

The asterisk in xrandr identifies the active modeline ("+" the default for the output) - xfce might do the same.

I don't think it's related to the resolution - do the new monitors have usb hubs (and your old one doesn't) or otherwise show up in "xinput"?
There are/were no adapters involved w/ old and new monitors?

no usb hubs and no adapters. I never checked xinput, will have to check that.

it's really bizarre, I've never experienced this type of behavior in any OS in any year.

You /did/ test the working 1080p monitor against the present software stack, did you?

yes, I unplugged the old monitor yesterday and plugged the new one in. nothing else changed.
